Chapter 279
“Why didn’t you let them go inside? It’s freezing out here,” Liam said, clearly unhappy.
“Everyone was so eager to welcome you. When they heard you were coming, they insisted on waiting outside, no matter how cold it was. Honestly, it breaks my heart,” Wallace said with a smile
Just then, Hayley walked over at an easy pace.
“Breaks your heart? Or are you putting on a sad show on purpose? Look at all these footprints. Anyone with eyes can tell they’ve been standing out here for at least an hour or two. If you really felt bad, you’d at least start a few fires so they could warm up. You’re just trying to make Captain Caldwell feel sorry for you, so he’ll give you more supplies.”
Wallace almost came apart under Hayley’s blunt words. He had never met anyone who tore his mask off so openly and humiliated him again and again as she did.
Did this woman just have no social skills, or was she doing it on purpose?
Even with his usual polite smile, Wallace could barely look at her. “Ms. Reid, these are the conditions we live in. If you want to say I’m putting on a sad show, there’s nothing I can say to argue with that.”
Hayley turned to Liam. “See that? Now he’s just throwing in the towel and dumping the problem or you so you can deal with it. Seriously, how many little tricks does he have up his sleeve?”
Wallace’s eyes widened.
He was furious. Absolutely furious.
Hayley made him so angry that he didn’t even feel like pretending anymore.
He finally spoke up.
“Captain Caldwell, I truly don’t have any other motives. We agreed to collect supplies together. I only want what we’re supposed to get. If you’re willing…”
“Willing to what?” Hayley cut in. “Think it through before you talk. If you’re just about to ask for free stuff again, then stop pretending to be a leader and hand your people over to Captain Caldwell already.”
“That’s enough!” Wallace snapped, completely fed up. He turned to his own people and shouted, “All of you, go back inside
He cut off his own act right there and then.
Of course, Wallace wanted to keep selling the sad story.
Base K1 was big and powerful. Acting pitiful in front of Liam might get him some support, or at the very least, a bigger share of supplies this time.
Especially since he hadn’t been able to get winter coats, Wallace had planned to use these people to squeeze a batch of supplies
out of Liam first.
However, he never expected Hayley to shut him down so hard that he didn’t even have a comeback.
He was utterly furious.
What Wallace didn’t know was that Hayley saw through him the instant he opened his mouth.
After dealing with him for ten years, how could she not read his thoughts?
One look at him, and she already knew what he was about to say. There was no way she was letting him get away with it tonight.
Once again, Hayley won completely.

Aftet forcing everyone to leave. Wallace led Liam inside and said, “Captain Caldwell, we prepared some food for you. We re not doing very well here, so I’m afraid it isn’t anything special. I hope you don’t trind.”
“No need,” Liam replied. “Shield Báse doesn’t have much, so we won’t waste your food. We’ll eat our own.”
Hayley immediately said, “Don’t be shy. They already made the food. Not eating it would be the real waste. If you won’t eat, I will. Where’s the table? I’m going right now.”
Liam and Wallace fell silent.
She never lifted a hand to help, but the second it was time to eat, she showed up first. She really was determined to drive Wallace
crazy.
For Liam’s sake, Wallace didn’t dare explode. Gritting his teeth, he led them upstairs to the dining area.
Two tables were set up, and they had even splurged on pan-fried canned ham. There was alcohol as well.
