Chapter 252
That night, after learning that Hayley had launched the first recapture attack on the city that very day, Alex fell into heavy silence.
It was February 27th.
The coldest time of the year, yet they were going out to fight zombies in this weather.
Was it just because the cold slowed the zombies down and made them easier targets? The freeze might be brutal for zombie but wasn’t it just as hard on real, living people?
Alex ran the simulation through their most powerful supercomputer, and the results were terrifying
They couldn’t use large-scale weapons in the city. That would only draw every zombie in town to them at once.
That meant the only option left was the most basic one: clearing the land and pushing forward slowly.
It was almost like monks going on some endless pilgrimage with no shortcuts, slowly chewing through the city, one block a time.
One wrong move in that process meant death.
Alex clenched his fists.
“Those people are insane. I’m not going crazy with them!”
What they called “the big picture” sounded to him like brain damage.
It had only been six months since the apocalypse. Humanity had barely managed to stabilize. Nobody had even started rebuilding yet, and they were already talking about taking back cities.
How dare Hayley do this?
Recapturing a city had huge benefits, but it absolutely wasn’t something they should be doing right now.
And besides, city zombies were terrifying.
Alex listened to the radio every single day, waiting for news. He was waiting for that reckless Hayley to give up, to hear that she finally couldn’t hold out anymore and had quit.
He waited and waited, until March 30th arrived.
The Haylight League had taken the entire High-Tech District.
Hayley had succeeded.
She spent a full month, in the dead of winter, leading her people to chew down the High Tech District piece by piece
Casualties were unavoidable, of course.
Base Ki lost 13 soldiers. Firebrand Base lost 20 Ember Base lost 4
Haylight Base only went three people, and none of them were injured. The worst injury they suffered was when Thomas twisted his ankle while saving someone
Compared to what they achieved, it was practically a miracle
A total of 150 thousand zombies in the High Tech District were wiped out completely, and over 100 survivors were rescued.
Some things, if you never try, will never happen

Unce you start, no matter the result, it becomes a miracle in its own way.
When Alex heard that Hayley had actually taken an entire district, he was utterly stunned.
She really did it.
Even if the High-Tech District had the smallest population and the easiest terrain among the five districts of Aecraton City, she had still done it.
Ding!
[High-Tech District recaptured successfully. Reward: Industry upgrades!
[Fully automated farming systems *10 (capable of cultivating 25,000 acres); automated irrigation units *10,000; production lines for instant noodle cups *10; and production lines for dried food goods *10!
[All farmland output within the territory is doubled!
“Phase one is complete. Everyone…” Hayley was in the middle of addressing the group when she suddenly heard her rewards
come in.
“Everyone, start dividing up the supplies. Take a few days off. Leonard, Tommy, you two stay here and inventory everything we recovered. I’m heading back first.”
