The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 31

Chapter 31

Why even bother killing zombies?

It wasn’t like they were much of a threat. If anything, having zombies wandering around her territory was like having built-in guard dogs. Who would dare try sneaking in with those things outside?

Thinking that, Hayley lowered her weapon. As she observed through the binoculars, she even felt a little disappointed. There weren’t nearly enough zombies at the entrance to her base.

A few more would’ve been perfect. Best-case scenario, the road would get completely blocked.

With that in mind, Hayley came up with a plan.

Half an hour later, she drove her armored SUV out to the edge of her land. She parked in the woods, grabbed Summer, and headed on foot toward the highway.

The farther they went, the stronger the stench of blood grew. From a ridge above the road, Hayley stared down at the chaos below. Seeing it up close was way more intense than watching through a scope.

The stretch just outside the city was especially chaotic.

Cars were barreling down the road in panic, and every single one had a dark wave of zombies chasing behind it. The undead looked tireless, sprinting and clawing after anything that moved.

If a driver got unlucky and ran into something or slowed down even for a second, the swarm swallowed the car whole. The creatures clung to the sides like leeches, pounding and slamming against the windows. With no visibility, the car would swerve and slam into another.

The moment a vehicle flipped, the zombies swarmed on top, ripping into anyone trapped inside.

Those with better luck or stronger cars had to dodge wreck after wreck, swerving and flooring it, desperate to outrun the nightmare behind them.

The section right below Hayley was relatively calm. Only four wrecks were scattered along the road, with about a dozen zombies drifting between them. Whenever a car passed, they’d perk up and give chase.

Hayley waited, her eyes following three speeding cars that zipped by and lured most of the zombies away. Then, she climbed down the hundred-foot drop with Summer right behind her. Summer’s footing was steadier than hers, as always.

They landed at a crash site.

Just then, a guttural shriek cut through the air.

A middle-aged female zombie was trapped inside a flipped sedan. Her matted hair hung in

greasy clumps, her face gaunt, with skin stretched tight over bone. Her chest had been torn open. One withered hand, still wearing a diamond ring, reached through the cracked window toward Hayley. She thrashed, straining against a seatbelt that kept her pinned in place.

Hayley glanced inside and found no one else. It looked like the woman’s husband had bolted when the outbreak hit, leaving her behind without even unbuckling her belt. She had been bitten before she ever had the chance to run.

“Sorry your husband was a prick.” Hayley raised her shovel. “Go bite his ear off in heaven.”

One swing finished it.

Hayley circled to the back of the car, grabbed the bumper, and yanked hard. With a crack, the wreck groaned and shifted. She dragged it back toward the road leading to her base.

A couple of zombies stumbled in her way. Before Hayley could move, Summer let out a sharp bark and lunged, tearing them down one by one.
