Chapter 32
Summer was like a zombie-killing machine.
“Don’t kill them outright. Just leave them crippled,” Hayley ordered.
Summer heard her command and let out a sharp bark. It held back just enough and didn’t crush the zombie’s skull, only tore off the zombie’s upper body.
Hayley looked at the half-bodied thing crawling forward, still shrieking.
Yeah, Summer nailed the orders.
They worked together: Summer handled the zombies, while Hayley dragged wrecked cars. They hauled every damaged vehicle to the entrance of her base, stacking them until the road was blocked tight.
One look at that giant accident blockade, and anyone with half a brain wouldn’t try to force their way through.
Hayley also had Summer herd the remaining zombies into the barricade. She was basically turning them into sentries, her own crude line of defense.
A few passing cars saw what she was doing, but none stopped to ask questions. This was an apocalypse-everyone was running for their lives. No one had the time or the energy to be neighborly.
Hayley didn’t care about the passing drivers, for they were just one-time bystanders. For 99.9 % of the people who drove past, that road was a one-way ticket out, no turning back.
Despite seeing Hayley’s ridiculous strength, they kept moving. There was no time to be curious or ask questions-they had to focus on getting out of danger.
After Hayley finished arranging the barricade and assigning the half-zombies their spots, she left.
Back at base, she and Summer took a quick wash. Suddenly, the alarm on the security monitors started blaring.
Hayley rushed up to the watchtower. She had moved her surveillance rigs up there so she could keep an eye on defenses at all times. One camera, which covered the farthest reach of the
highway, was flashing.
She zoomed in.
A pickup truck loaded with supplies was roaring in from the city side and slammed to a stop in front of the lane she had just barricaded. The people inside looked stunned at the sight of the jammed road.
They idled for ten seconds or so, which drew the half-zombies closer. Then the driver backed up a little to avoid the crowd of crawling corpses and hit the gas, trying to force his way

Hayley’s eyes went cold instantly.
Great, they were coming right for her.
She grabbed the crossbow by the railing and aimed at the truck’s tire, which had crossed into her attack zone.
Whoosh!
A bolt screamed through the air.
The tire blew in a thunderous pop. The truck lurched forward on momentum, then came to a
