Inside the pitch-black, endless subway tunnel, one group of people sprinted flat out ahead, while a swarm of humanoid creatures chased relentlessly behind them.
The sounds of pursuit were amplified inside the tunnel. Zombies ran on all fours like starving dogs, terrifyingly fast. Their hoarse, hungry snarls echoed straight into the eardrums.
The gasping roars grew closer and closer.
From 300 yards, to 200, 100, 50…
Just as the tireless zombies were about to catch up to the humans, a wall of earth burst straight up from the ground.
The earthen wall rose violently, stretching all the way to the ceiling of the tunnel.
When the zombie horde closed to within 50 yards of the group, the wall slammed into place and blocked them completely.
That 50-yard zone was Hayley’s forbidden territory.
With the zombies stopped, the people finally got a brief moment to breathe. They pushed themselves harder and ran faster. After another 500 yards, the earth wall was finally smashed apart.
The chase immediately resumed.
Every time the gap shrank to 50 yards, another earthen wall shot up, briefly slowing the zombie swarm.
Unfortunately, the limitations of human stamina were becoming increasingly obvious.
People got tired. Zombies didn’t.
The intervals between Hayley’s earth walls grew shorter and shorter.
They had only covered half the distance, and more than a dozen walls had already gone up. Yet, they still
had half the distance left.
At this slowing pace, Hayley’s gifts couldn’t possibly hold all the way. Each towering earth wall cost an enormous amount of her mental energy.
She ran with tightly furrowed brows, driving everyone forward.
If it were just her alone, running wouldn’t be a problem. However, these were all newly accepted residents.
Just then, the beam from her headlamp swept across something massive ahead, reflecting light at them.
That was…another subway train!
The train was stranded right in the middle of the tunnel. It appeared to have suffered an accident shortly
after departure and had been forced to stop before reaching the next station.
Thud, thud, thud….
Thud, thud, thud!
The train was still packed with zombies.
When the zombies sensed living people approaching, they immediately became active, snarling wildly as they slammed against the train doors and smashed their fists into the glass.
Hayley’s eyes lit up.
“I’ve got a plan! We’ll use this train to block the tunnel. Women, kids, and seniors, keep running. All the men will stay and push the train!”
She waved the slower women and seniors forward. The moment her order went out, everyone moved.
Liam’s team rushed forward to push the train.
The seniors and children kept running ahead. All the men stopped, and quite a few women stayed behind, too. Together, they rushed to the front of the train and added whatever strength they could.
With nearly 100 people pushing together, the train’s wheels grinding against the tracks finally started to
loosen.
Once it shifted, the train actually began to move.
