The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 375

Chapter 375

“Run!”

This time, Hayley only raised the ground beneath the subway train. With a thunderous crash, the earth surged upward, lifting the train and jamming it hard against the ceiling of the tunnel

“How many different gifts does our boss even have?” Derek said, staring at the rising walls of earth behind Hayley in shock.

If he remembered right, this was already the sixth one.

And none of them were repeats.

“No idea,” Ethan said, looking at her like a total fanboy. “All I know is that she’s insane.”

“Keep moving!” Liam said from the side.

“Okay!”

Everyone launched into the final sprint.

In the last 600 yards, the seniors and kids completely ran out of strength. Luckily, Hayley kept the zombie horde blocked. Everyone supported each other, half dragging and half carrying.

Just as the zombies finally broke through the subway barrier, they saw the platform of the next station ahead.

The platform was completely empty. There were no trains or zombies.

“What station is this?”

“Evergreen Mall,” Kit said to Hayley. “Evergreen Mall connects two subway lines. We’re on Line 11. Hardly anyone rides this line in the last few stops, and the exits all lead directly into the mall. The other one is Line 2. That’s Brookville’s busiest line. Tons of people ride it. It connects several major neighborhoods around Evergreen Mall, and it has a lot of exits.”

After hearing that, Hayley immediately understood the situation.

They had been running on Line 11. All of its exits at Evergreen Mall Station led inside the mall. When the zombie outbreak started, the mall would’ve been closed, so hardly anyone would’ve come this way.

People in this area would’ve taken Line 2 instead.

Judging by what happened at Fairytale Park Station, Line 2 was probably packed with zombies.

Hayley climbed onto the platform. The rest of the residents arrived as well, helping each other up onto the platform.

Hayley scanned the empty station. The floor, warning signs, benches, and trash cans were all covered in a thick layer of dust. There wasn’t a single footprint.

There really hadn’t been anyone here

It was safe.

Still, they couldn’t stay. Even if the zombies from Line 2 didn’t come, the ones from the tunnel behind them eventually would.

“Hayley, the next stop is Downtown Medical Center,” Liam said as he walked up beside her “That station’s always packed. We can’t stop there.”

Hayley was thinking about where they could settle. Liam clearly was, too.

He handed her the subway map.

They were at Evergreen Mall Station. The previous and the next station were off limits. That meant they had to enter Evergreen Mall itself.

“Captain Reid,” Kit said as he stepped forward. He knew this place well. “Even though Line 11 also transfers inside Evergreen Mall, the transfer route is about 500 yards away. We can exit through Exit Three and go straight into the mall.”
