Hayley forced open a gap with her team, giving everything she had to support them
One by one, more than 30 people from Monica’s base made it out alive
When no more survivors appeared, and only the surging zombie horde remained, Hayley frowned as she retresed
She still hadn’t seen Monica.
Monica had been running at the very back of the group.
The entire time, she had been doing everything she could to save her people and cut down zombies.
She couldn’t be…
Just as Hayley pulled the rescued survivors about 100 yards away from the zombie mass, she saw it.
A man completely engulfed in flames burst out of the horde, clutching a woman tightly in his arms.
Fire burned across his body from head to toe. The flames roared like he was using his own life as fuel. Dense waves of zombies threw themselves at him, again and again, like moths flying into fire. But the moment they touched the flames, they ignited violently.
His face was drained of all color, huge beads of sweat forming on his forehead, only to evaporate instantly in the heat.
Every second the flames burned, his heart was forced to pump at its absolute limit, his entire body feeling like it was about to combust.
The fire–element flames weren’t just scorching the zombies anymore.
They were burning him alive, too.
From his veins to his bones, it was like a self–detonation, a pain so intense that it felt like melting
Only the small space in his arms was untouched by the fire.
Hayley stopped where she stood, watching the living inferno charge forward. She could clearly see the flames around Danny growing weaker.
Step by step, it grew fainter and thinner.
The instant he finally burst free of the zombie horde, his legs gave out, and he fell to the ground, still holding Monica.
The flames on his body vanished completely. At the same time, he lost all ability to fight back, left to be torn apart as zombies lunged toward him.
“Raarh!” A zombie leaped forward.
At that moment, Danny was suddenly shoved aside. Monica, who had been in his arms the entire time, blocked the
fatal strike for him.
Danny’s pupils shrank violently. “Monica!”
She met his eyes and smiled. “I remember everything you did for me. Live. Run!”

She shoved him away with all her strength.
In that instant, Danny, whose body was already burned soft and weak, exploded with strength again. He grabbed Monica and rolled, pulling her back into his arms.
Damn it… Damn it. Damn it!
How could he live alone?
He loved her. He loved her with every strand of his being!
Even if 99% of her heart belonged to her work, her mission, her base, and he only had that last 1%, he still loved her with everything he had.
If they were going to die, then they’d die together!
Danny tightened his grip around Monica and closed his eyes in despair. The zombie tide crashed toward them like a collapsing mountain.
Just then, a crisp voice rang out above his head.
“Giving up this easily, and you still want revenge on me?”
Danny looked up in disbelief and saw a slender, upright figure standing there.
