Chapter 396
“Nice to finally meet you!”
Hayley greeted Scott warmly and shook his hand, as if she had just run into one of her own kind.
Scott was clearly caught off guard by her enthusiasm.
In his imagination, Hayley should’ve been a woman with a strange temper; someone cold, ruthless, deeply calculating, and cautious to the extreme. He had even assumed she wouldn’t be particularly good–looking.
A first meeting should’ve been a sharp exchange, probing each other back and forth, peeling away layers until both sides understood exactly what kind of person they were dealing with. That was basic behavior for someone in
power.
He had even planned to read Hayley’s personality and bottom line while she tried to sound him out.
Yet here she was, acting like a cheerful young woman. She didn’t seem particularly scheming and was unexpectedly beautiful.
Could she really be this simple?
What Scott didn’t know was that Hayley had already seen straight through him.
There was no need for probing questions at all.
When meeting complete strangers, Hayley usually started with interrogation. For well–known figures like Scott, though, she was basically a cheat–code prophet.
She already knew everything.
There was no chance he would get to reverse–engineer her limits.
Meanwhile, Milo and Liam were watching Hayley’s unusual friendliness, both wearing expressions that were… complicated.
They were even a little jealous.
After all, she definitely hadn’t been this warm when she first met them.
Especially Liam.
The first time he met Hayley, she had practically bullied him to death.
How was that fair?
“Captain Fuller, it’s nice to meet you,” Liam said as he reached out to shake hands, smoothly pulling Hayley’s hand back in the process. “I’m Liam Caldwell from Base K1.”
“Captain Caldwell. I’ve heard plenty about you as well,” Scott replied with a gentle smile.
“Why’s everyone being so polite?” Milo cut in. “Scott looks all refined and scholarly, but he’s not gentle at all. You don’t need to hold back with him. Just act like yourselves.”
It was hard to tell who Milo was saying that for.
Probably for Hayley, the bandit queen.
“By the way, how come you’re here already? Where’s the rest of your base?” Hayley asked.
+18 PDS
“They’re still in Crestford,” Scott replied, adjusting his gold–rimmed glasses calmly. “With your help, we’ve pushed the entire group to the outskirts. At this pace, Tomorrow Base should be fully out in about a month. Speaking of which, I really do appreciate your help, Captain Reid.”
“No big deal. We’re all survivors. I lend a hand when I can.”
Scott’s eyes flickered slightly behind his glasses when he heard that.
Could the top figure in city recapture, the leader of the Haylight League, really be this soft–hearted and easygoing?
His gaze drifted to the people seated behind them.
They were on a bus, with many survivors from Milky Way Base and Evergreen Base sitting in the back.
He had seen Hayley turn back to rescue people during the breakout.
