The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 403

Chapter 403

Scott looked at Hayley walking toward him.

After a long pause, he asked, “You only brought one helicopter?”

“Captain Fuller, I know you must be deeply moved. Even with equipment so scarce, I still went all out and flew the only aircraft our base has to help you. If it were me, I’d be so touched I’d cry,” Hayley said earnestly.

Scott paused. “I mean, is one helicopter enough?”

“Well, worst case, we work a little harder and fly you out trip by trip. Don’t worry. As long as I’m alive, I’ll get you out. Survivors are supposed to help each other,” Hayley said, sincerity written all over her face.

Scott was rendered completely speechless.

“Captain Reid, your rescue plan seems a bit unrealistic. Your helicopter only has five seats. We’ve got over eight hundred people here. If you fly us out one trip at a time, how long do you think that’ll take?” a burly man behind Scott complained.

Hayley glanced lazily at the man. She didn’t speak, only gave a slow, casual cough.

Griffin immediately stepped forward. “Hey, this is free rescue. What are you contributing? Do we owe you something? Is that really your attitude?”

“Griffin, the adults are talking. Why are you interrupting?” Hayley turned and scolded him sternly. “We’re allies. Do you understand what allies mean? Mutual help, long-distance support. Even if you don’t get it, I’m sure Captain Fuller understands

our goodwill!

“Besides, it’s not like Captain Fuller said he wouldn’t compensate us. The way you’re talking makes it sound like he wants to take advantage of us for free. How’s Captain Fuller supposed to hold his head up in front of his base after that?”

“You’re right. Sorry,” Griffin said, lowering his head obediently in front of Hayley as he accepted the scolding.

Scott fell silent.

He looked at Hayley’s serious expression. Behind his gold-rimmed glasses, his beautiful eyes flickered with light. The sinule on

his gentle face grew even warmer.

“Captain Reid, your subordinate is right. My guy was being rude.”

He turned to look at Sawyer Vaughn, his tone cold.

“Who told you to speak? Take your punishment.”

Sawyer, a towering man over six feet tall, visibly trembled. He lowered his head, tear thashing across his face. Then, he pulled a dagger from his waist and aimed it at his left hand.

Slash!

In front of Hayley, Sawyer chopped off his own pinky finger

Sawyer, missing his finger, lowered his head. “Yes, sit!”

The tall, broad-shouldered Sawyer said nothing more as he walked away.

Everyone behind Scott seemed completely unfazed by the scene. No one even glanced at Sawyer.

Hayley silently updated her understanding of Scott’s group to an entirely new level.
