Chapter 407
Bright moonlight spilled across the scarred land.
It fell on the howling, shifting masses of zombies, on one struggling human refuge after another, and finally on the bloodthirsty eyes in front of Hayley, holding something back to the breaking point.
“What’s wrong with you?”
Scott stared at Hayley. Feeling the blood at the corner of his mouth, he lowered his gaze and ran his thumb along his lips. In an instant, the blood smeared across his red mouth.
He gave a twisted, eerie smile. “Can you help me?”
Half a minute later, behind a large tree.
They had their backs to the camp, sitting not too close and not too far apart.
Scott had a cigarette between his lips.
Hayley looked at the arm in front of her, bitten so badly that bone was visible, and silently wrapped it with bandages.
The bandages and medication were all provided by Scott.
There was clearly no painkiller. Scott could only rely on smoking to dull the pain a little.
As cigarette butts piled up on the ground, the bloodlust in his eyes slowly faded.
“Is this how it is for you every day?”
After finishing the bandage, Hayley looked up at him.
Scott picked up the cigarette butt and smiled gently. “Of course not.”
“Really?”
Just then, Hayley heard a disturbance from the crowd behind them.
A big man got up from the ground, ran out of the group, and slammed his head into a rock. After two hard impacts, blood ran down his head. He stopped, hugged the rock, and curled up.
He kept pounding his own head.
But because Scott had warned them earlier, he didn’t make a sound, even in that much pain.
“No. That was a lie,” Scott said quietly.
Hayley looked at him and saw Scott stub out his cigarette. In his gentle eyes, worry and heaviness had appeared.
“Ever since we discovered that the liquid inside crystal cores could boost gifts, everyone started eating them. But along with a small increase in our gifts, every single one of us developed physical problems”
Hayley could tell.
Out of Scott’s 800 people, over 150 were Gifted
Most of those Gifted were around level two
Swallowing zombie crystal cores raw was nowhere near as effective as proper extraction Most of the essence couldn’t be absorbed at all.
Instead, almost all of the toxins were absorbed
This was like lighting fireworks on a bonfire. It could blow up at any moment.

“At first, it was just headaches Like ants biting inside your skull. You could grit your teeth and get through it. Later, it turned into nerve pain. You can feel someone plucking your nerves and blood vessels like guitar strings, faster and faster. That’s when you start getting irritated.
“You’d get so irritated that you want to destroy anything making noise. You want to tackle anything that moves, make it stop. make it shut up, or make it stop moving. You want to tear everything apart so it all goes quiet.”
“Why didn’t you stop? Why keep eating them?”
Scott’s smile grew even gentler. “Once the arrow is released, you can’t take it back.”
Hayley fell silent.
