Chapter 416
With Hayley constantly cheering him on, Scott’s blade moved faster, stronger, and sharper.
From midnight until 3 a.m., they fought nonstop for four full hours. Finally, as a third of the base’s population was lost, the zombie tide from all directions came to a halt.
After Scott finished off the last zombie, his exhausted subordinates staggered forward.
“Boss, I really didn’t know this many zombies would show up tonight,” Sawyer said with his head lowered. Even the thrill of killing zombies couldn’t suppress the fear gripping him now.
Scott looked at him gently. “You deserve to die.”
But he didn’t kill Sawyer.
“Clean up the area. Check everyone’s bodies. You personally oversee it. If anything goes wrong again, you die.”
“Got it!” Sawyer shuddered violently, as if he had been granted a pardon. Sweat beaded on his forehead.
Scott didn’t look at him again. Covered in blood like a wolf that had just survived a brutal hunt, he turned and walked back.
The moment he turned around, he was met with a huge smile.
“Captain Fuller, you’re amazing! You killed so many zombies. You’re the most impressive man I’ve ever seen.”
Hearing the clear, pleasant voice of a young woman, Scott froze.
This was the first time he had ever heard a woman speak to him like this.
From the moment Scott killed his first zombie, and then his first human, women had shown him only fear, while men showed only awe.
Some women had tried to approach him, to get close, but the moment they saw how he killed, not a single one could keep up their fake enthusiasm in front of him.
If he could kill others, he could kill them, too.
In Scott’s eyes, men and women were nothing more than weapons. Women were simply lower quality ones. If they weren’t useful, they were discarded.
Aside from the thin layer of gentle pretense on the surface, everything about him was ruthless, cold, and cruel.
No woman had ever earned his favor. Long ago, the women in the base learned to avoid him like the plague.
He had never heard a single word of admiration from a woman. He had never seen anyone smile at him like this.
He was a man without love.
Ironically, before the apocalypse, his family had been the kind everyone envied. Wealthy, loving, perfect on the surface.
His parents were extremely rich. Both sides came from industry-leading families, the only son and daughter of powerful empires. Their marriage was a strong alliance that looked blissful from the outside.
Behind the glamorous facade, his parents lived separate lives.
His father kept countless mistresses, and his mother kept younger lovers. He himself was born through IVF, because his mother despised his father so much that she wouldn’t even let him touch her. After he was born, she never even looked at him.
At first, his grandfathers had high hopes for him as the heir of two great families.
But they were determined to swallow each other whole. After exhausting every scheme, they fell out completely.
