Chapter 424
A helicopter flew across a clean, open stretch of wilderness.
The people onboard watched the scenery below shift from city blocks to suburbs, then to rural towns. Crisscrossing highways and farmland spread out beneath them, the view growing wider and wider.
Of course, they were also moving from a zombie-free safe zone toward the outer boundary, where zombies began
to appear.
In town after town and small county settlements, zombies wandered through the streets.
Hearing the noise above, the zombies all screeched like hungry baby birds waiting to be fed. They opened their mouths wide, staring at the source of the sound, heads tracking the helicopter’s path as it came and went.
Such a shame. Why didn’t it drop straight into their mouths?
From above, Hayley looked down at the scattered zombie zones, her gaze gradually settling on the mining area ahead.
The helicopter landed with a roar, kicking up a massive cloud of dust.
The moment it touched down, the zombies wandering near the mining site were drawn over by the noise.
The fastest ones were several miner zombies, still wearing hard hats and work gear.
Their skin was darkened, their bodies thin and wiry. Most of them were middle-aged. One after another, the miner zombies opened their mouths, exposing yellowed teeth, stretching out rough, bony fingers with barely any flesh as they lunged forward.
Bang!
The helicopter door swung open, and three or four men jumped out first.
Slash!
Slash!
Slash!
A few swift strikes later, the zombies rushing in were all taken down
Once the area was clear, a girl in combat gear with her hair tied in a high ponytail stepped out unhurriedly.
It was Hayley and her group.
She had Leonard, Thomas, Griffin, and the young boy, Nash, with her.
She came to the mining area to scout it out and assess the site and the route leading to it. If there were no major issues, she would have Liam open up the route, clear the surrounding zombies, and officially take over the mine.
After the zombies were dealt with, Nash went around one by one, cracking open Before long, he had gathered all the cores from the fallen zombies.
“Good job,” Hayley said, patting his shoulder.
skulls to look for crystal cores.
After rescuing him that day, she learned that he wasn’t even 16 yet. According to Haylight League rules, he should have been sent to school.
Nash absolutely refused to go back to school and insisted on following Hayley instead.
He said that from the day he followed her, he would only work for her from then on.
Hayley looked at the half-grown kid, thought it over, and nodded.
However, she didn’t bring him into her guard unit.
Even the weakest member of her guard, Sienna, was a mental-variant Gifted. She wanted to maintain a certain standard for her guard. At the very least, Nash would need to reach a certain level before he could join.
It also gave him motivation. Even as a regular person, he had to be the strongest regular person and not drag anyone down.
From then on, Nash worked alongside them.
Most of the time, the others would look out for him. When zombies were killed, the cleanup and crystal core collecting were usually left to him.
Nash wiped off the crystal cores and put them neatly into a bag.
Just then, near some collapsed structures riddled with mining pits, he thought he saw a small girl flash past.
“Boss…” he called out to Hayley.
“What is it?”
“Something just moved over there,” he said, pointing firmly in that direction.
Hayley scanned the area. There were no other zombies nearby, but she still led everyone over. As they moved, she released her perception outward.
She sensed nothing.
