The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 429

Chapter 429

Matt was the first to react. He rushed to Vanessa’s bedside and saw the pain on her face slowly ease, a hint of color finally returning to her deathly pale skin.

Seeing that, he turned to Hayley in excitement and grabbed her hand. “You saved my wife. From now on, I owe you my life!”

“It’s not over yet,” the medic who had been helping with the delivery said at that moment. “Vanessa looks stable for now, but the baby isn’t. I estimate we’ve got at most three hours. If the baby isn’t delivered by then, it won’t survive.”

Hearing that, Matt jumped immediately. “I’ll go get a medical kit right now!”

“Matt!” Raymond shouted, grabbing him. “It’s full of zombies outside!”

“Even if it’s hell itself, I’m going!”

Vanessa had been saved. Now, he had to gamble everything for the baby. He would walk through fire if he had to.

“Calm down.” Raymond grabbed the already unhinged Matt hard. “I’m saying you can’t get it alone. We’ll go together!”

Only then did the blind rush fade a little from Matt’s eyes. He looked at Raymond nervously. “Raymond…”

“Enough. We’re one base. We stand or fall together. Vanessa giving birth is everyone’s business here.” Raymond turned to the others. “All men, grab your gear and come with me. Sharon, you stay and guard the place.”

Sharon nodded with her small face drawn tight. “I will!”

After Raymond assigned tasks to his people, his gaze fell on Hayley and the other four.

When it came to what to do with them, he hesitated.

Hayley was an outsider. She had just saved Vanessa, but there was no way he could feel safe leaving these five people inside a base that barely had any defenses.

If they decided to do something to the base, he would have no way to stop them.

“You’re coming with us,” he ordered Hayley.

“Why?” Griffin said lazily.

Raymond’s face hardened. “Because this is our base.”

Griffin blinked his one eye, about to argue, but Hayley stopped him.

“Fine. We’ll go with you.” Hayley agreed calmly.

She might not always act like a saint, but she really was human.

As long as her interests weren’t being threatened, Hayley was genuinely tolerant toward people and situations.

She understood how hard survival was for everyone. She rarely kicked people when they were down or seized things by force. Sometimes, she even helped others proactively, without asking for anything in return.

Of course, once her bottom line was crossed, she showed no mercy at all.

She wasn’t purely good or purely evil.

Good and evil coexisted in her without any contradiction.

She was the kind of person who could rob and kill on the roadside one moment, then jump into the water the next to save a drowning child.

She was contradictory but had clear lines between right and wrong.

That was why Liam had always thought highly of Hayley, and he liked her more the better he knew her.

He believed she was strong without oppressing, and imposing without being tyrannical. Her claws were always aimed upward, never downward.
