Chapter 435
Griffin tightened his grip on Hayley’s wrist and answered without hesitation, “Your daughter-in-law.”
Hayley stared at him.
Hearing that, the old woman grew even more excited. She tugged Griffin forward toward one of the rooms, talking nonstop as she walked.
“I’ve got money for you! I’ve saved up a lot. Later, I’ll sell the apartment to Mr. Harris next door and scrape together a down payment. Then, you two can buy a nice new place in the city.”
Hayley and Griffin exchanged looks.
After just a few steps, the old woman stopped in front of a locked door. Her hands trembled as she fumbled for a key and opened it.
When the door swung open, a surprisingly clean and tidy old apartment appeared before them.
Every surface gleamed. The place was spotless; a stark contrast to the dusty, chaotic hallway outside.
“Come in, come in! I’ll get you something to eat.”
Hayley kicked Griffin lightly.
Griffin immediately said, “Mom, have you seen anyone else?”
“Anyone else…”
The old woman froze. She didn’t answer. Instead, she forcefully dragged them both inside.
Griffin instantly became alert. “If you don’t tell me, I’m not going in.”
She turned around and snapped, “Eat something first. Then you can go out and play!”
Griffin grimaced. “I’m grown. I’m not going out to play.”
“In my eyes, you’ll always be a child. Eat first!”
Her face hardened. Her dry, withered hands clamped onto him like iron, and she yanked him fully into the room.
Once inside, she headed straight for the kitchen.
Griffin glanced back at Hayley. “What now?”
Hayley stared at the old woman, her mind racing. This was the first person she had encountered here..
Everything about the old woman felt wrong.
Leonard and the others’ disappearance was almost certainly connected to her. She clearly had something unusual going on. It was very likely a special mutated ability, similar to Sienna’s gift.
“Go along with her for now. Get her talking. First, find out where Leonard and the others are,” Hayley said quietly.
“Got it.” Griffin nodded.
Just then, the old woman came over carrying two large cans of peaches.
“I saved these for you. Your favorite. Eat.”

Hayley immediately noticed the cans were moldy.
The bright yellow peach slices inside looked like they had been burned by cigarette tips, covered in green-gray mold.
“Mom, I’m not hungry right now,” Griffin said with a cheerful grin.
“Doesn’t matter. You’re eating them! You love these. I saved them just for you.”
Clumsily, she twisted the lid open and pulled out a shiny, spotless spoon from her pocket.
She plunged the spoon into the can and stared straight at him, as if nothing else mattered until he took a bite.
Griffin took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and scooped out a piece.
