Chapter 436
“Mom!” Griffin shouted immediately, stopping the old lady. “You’re not about to eat my wife, are you?”
The old woman shot him a glare.
“So now that you’ve got a wife, I don’t matter anymore, huh?” She turned to Hayley again. “Come with me.”
After saying that, she turned and walked toward an inner room.
Hayley stood up.
“Captain Gorgeous…”
“I’m going to take a look.”
“Wait.” Griffin pulled her back and carefully retied the red cord around her wrist, knotting it tight. “Be careful.”
“Yeah.”
Hayley followed the old woman step by step into the room.
The moment she entered, the door slammed shut behind her. Her nerves jumped, but before she could react, a large metal | appeared in front of her.
The old woman cradled it like a treasure and held it out.
“Come look.”
Hayley frowned. “What is this?”
“All for you.”
The old woman smiled and opened the metal box. Inside was a thick stack of moldy cash and a few pieces of paper.
“This is the money I saved for Samson to get married. About six thousand dollars. And this is the deed to this old apartment. I all yours now.”
Hayley stared.
After stuffing those into Hayley’s hands, the old woman shakily pulled out a cloth pouch from her clothes
She opened it layer by layer.
Inside were an old gold ring, a necklace, and a pair of earrings.
“Take these to the mall and melt them down Make whatever style you like.”
Her hands trembled as she shoved everythig into Hayley’s palus
Hayley didn’t want to take them, but the woman’s grip was credibly tight so tight that Hayley could feel the warmth of her
skin
She was real Alive
“How have you survived these past two years? Hayley asked
“I’m just an old woman live how Loan sit in the sun Walt for Samson to come back.” the old woman said with a smile
“What do you eat?”
The old woman pulled Hayley into her bedroom Inside was a stugle box of crackers issued by the mine
+15 B
“I don’t eat much. One cracker every three days. I still have plenty. Don’t buy me more.”
Hayley frowned.
She knew some elderly people barely ate, but this was too little. Two years, and the old woman still hadn’t finished one box.
Hayley thought of the canned fruit.
“You don’t even eat the canned peaches?”
“They’re expensive. They’re for Samson. I don’t eat them.”
Hayley’s chest tightened.
They were so expensive that this old woman would rather let them rot than take a single bite.
At that moment, Hayley noticed photos pressed under items on the table.
They showed a boy growing up, year by year. From the age of five onward, his right eye was covered with a cloth patch.
“Samson had a hard life,” the old woman said softly. “His father and I were always busy. We didn’t watch him closely enough. An accident ruined his eye. After that, he only had one left.”
Hayley finally understood why the woman had mistaken Griffin for her son.
“I didn’t want him working outside, either. I didn’t want people laughing at him. City folks won’t hire a one-eyed man. Mining near home was better,” the old woman rambled.
As she kept talking, Hayley suddenly heard a loud shout echo through the building.
