The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 458

Chapter 458

Hayley laughed even harder, full of mock sympathy.

“Only an idiot would help a bunch of morons like them,” she sneered.

“They’re offering 100 thousand crystal cores and 10 tons of food,” Liam said.

Hayley paused for half a second, then straightened up with righteous conviction.

“But I can’t stand seeing people trapped in misery with no one reaching out. This is my duty. I’m going!”

Liam stared at her in silence.

At that moment, inside the satellite communications room in the Caldwell residence. A stream of urgent messages filled the massive screen in front of Hayley.

[Requesting aid. Requesting aid. Ark One urgently needs help!

[Emergency assistance required. Immediate support needed!

[Ark One is willing to offer 100 thousand crystal cores or 5 thousand evolution serums, plus 10 tons of food!]

The screen showed only Ark One’s transmissions.

The other two Ark bases remained completely silent. There wasn’t a single reply.

“Those two are calculating every angle,” Samuel said coldly. “They’re waiting for someone else to move first, or for Ark One to be desperate enough to raise the price.”

“Couldn’t they just wait for Ark One to collapse completely and then swoop in to loot the remains?” Hayley asked.

Samuel shook his head slowly, eyes sharp with experience.

“If it comes to that, Ark One would destroy everything before letting anyone take a single scrap. So the two of them are waiting, watching to see who cracks first. The moment someone moves, the other side learns their bottom line and squeezes out more profit.”

Hayley nodded thoughtfully.

“Then all the more reason for us to step in so they won’t be burdened by this tough decision.”

Samuel froze for a second. Then, he burst out laughing.

“Go,” he said. “Use my name.”

Half an hour later, five helicopters lifted off. The Haylight Base insignia was removed and replaced with the

banner of Base K1.

Hayley brought Leonard and Griffin with her. The rest of the team was made up of Liam’s people.

Hayley handed Nash to Thomas to learn about league operations, telling him to report anything urgent immediately.

Robert stayed behind to oversee the shelter, while Milo and the others held the front lines.

Everything inside the league remained orderly and stable.

Hayley boarded the helicopter with Liam and roughly 20 others, heading straight for Ark One

+151

This was Hayley’s first time leaving the Eastern region.

Once the helicopter crossed the edge of her territory, the desolation below hit like a weight on the chest.

To the north lay a massive coastal megacity that once held over ten million people. As the helicopter passed overhead, there wasn’t a single sign of human life.

Endless waves of zombies packed the streets, rooftops, and high rises.

Entire districts were nothing but black, crawling masses.

Buildings that once glittered with noise and light stood broken and hollow after two years of the apocalypse.

Steel frames jutted out from shattered towers. Tall weeds sprouted from cracks in concrete.

One skyscraper bore the scars of a massive fire. Blackened burn marks streaked from its middle all the way to th roof.

Like a disfigured face, it was horrifying at a glance.

There wasn’t a single living soul.
