Chapter 47
“Raargh!”
A foul stench hit her face as something shot toward her.
It was moving faster than any zombie she had ov soon,
But it missed.
A split second later, Hayley slammed her shovel down from above, sending the creature flying several yards across the basement floor.
Hayley had been fighting in the apocalypse for ten years, She didn’t need to learn from mistakes anymore her instinets were sharp enough to react in an instant.
The zombie twisted on the ground, its body bending into an unnatural, backward position. Both arms were bent at a grotesque angle, palms braced against the floor, legs sticking out sideways.
Then, like some massive four-legged centipede, pushed itself upright. Long, tangled hair covered most of its face. Through the strands, angle gray-white eye glared at Hayley,
The basement light flickered overhead as the zombie charged, its body moving so fast that it left afterimages in the air.
Hayley’s expression hardened. One thought snapped into her mind.
This was a speed-enhanced mutant zombie!
In a blink, the thing was right in front of her. Its long hair flew back as its mouth stretched wide, revealing a black pit of a throat.
Hayley noticed it had no tongue, and its lips had open, lined with uneven teeth snapping straight een ripped away. Its bloody maw yawned her.
Clang!
The zombie bit down hard-but only on the blade of her shovel. Hayley drove the steel edge straight through its skull and pinned its head to the concrete wall.
The zombie thrashed violently, arms and legs jerking as it tried to break free.
Hayley braced both hands on the handle and shoved harder.
Crunch!
And then, the thing went still.
The zombie was fast, but she was faster and stronger.
The shovel had sunk an inch deep into the reinforced concrete wall. It was the kind of strike no normal person could’ve managed, let alone pull the shovel free again.
