Chapter 499
After giving Griffin his instructions, Hayley patted Summer on the head.
“Keep an eye on him. Don’t let him bolt.”
“Woof, woof!”
Griffin almost rolled his eyes.
With everything settled, Hayley turned and followed Nathaniel inside. As she walked past, several members of Ark Three in white masks glanced at her again and again.
Hayley met their stares openly, one by one.
The moment their eyes met hers, every single one of them looked away.
On the way in, someone from Ark Three spoke up. “We heard you were helped by Base K1 recently. What are they like?”
“They’re strong,” Nathaniel said, glancing sideways at Hayley.
“Did you really give them 200 thousand tons of grain and 200 thousand crystal cores?”
“Yes.”
The man in the white mask chuckled. “Sounds like they’re barely surviving out there.”
Hayley paused.
“Traveling that far just to beg for a little food,” someone else added. “Was it really worth it?”
“They must’ve been starving,” another said casually. “Desperate enough to throw their lives away over supplies.”
“Pathetic,” a final one concluded.
Hayley didn’t even know what expression to make anymore.
Nathaniel turned to her with what he clearly thought was a reassuring smile. “It’s fine. I don’t mind your background.”
Hayley snapped her head toward him. “Can’t say the same about you, idiot.”
Nathaniel frowned.
Just then, a pretty server carrying drinks approached from the opposite direction. Seeing the crowd ahead, she lowered her head nervously and tried to step aside.
The white masked man beside her didn’t slow down at all and slammed straight into her shoulder.
Crash!
The glasses in her hands shattered, red wine splashing everywhere. The dark liquid soaked across the clothes of a man in a white mask.
“I’m sorry!” the server cried, her whole body shaking as she rushed over and tried desperately to wipe him off.” I’m sorry! Please forgive me. Please… Please forgive me.”
Before she could say more, she was yanked up off the ground.

The man grabbed her by the throat, lifting her effortlessly. “Your life isn’t worth one sleeve of this outfit. Why would I forgive you?”
Her face drained of all color. Skinny and fragile, she trembled violently as her breath was slowly squeezed away
Hayley frowned.
What unsettled her most wasn’t the cruelty. It was the reaction around them.
No one looked shocked. No one tried to stop it. They watched the scene the way someone watched dirt being brushed off a shoe. Like crushing an insect.
Who would mourn an insect?
Even someone as hard–edged as Hayley felt deeply uncomfortable standing among these people.
At that moment, a clear, booming middle–aged voice rang out.
“What’s going on here?”
