Chapter 500
“I guarantee you’ll enjoy today’s auction.”
The mood in the room shifted immediately.
The manager from Base Two looked energized as he led the entire group inside. Meanwhile, the server was grabbed by other staff and dragged away.
Hayley stayed where she was for a second, watching the girl disappear.
Then, Nathaniel’s voice came from beside her.
“She’s just a nobody.”
Hayley turned and looked at him through his cold mask.
Nathaniel kept walking, speaking casually as he went.
“That’s how it’s handled in any base. If someone from another base takes a liking to someone, it’s just a word away. No one ruins relationships over something that small.”
He said it like he was talking about trading spare parts.
Hayley looked at these people who stood above everyone else. These three bases were controlled by people exactly
like them.
Just before entering the main hall, Nathaniel slowed and looked at her. “But I wouldn’t treat you like that. You’re different.”
Hayley paused. For a moment, she genuinely didn’t know how to respond.
She took a breath. “Glad you appreciate my greatness.”
Nathaniel stopped short.
Hayley didn’t bother with him anymore and strode straight into the so–called auction hall.
Nathaniel watched her back, a smile forming beneath his mask. He really did like the way she never took him seriously. He liked hearing her talk.
Inside the hall, Hayley’s eyes instantly caught on the sheer luxury.
A deep red carpet covered the entire auction floor. Above them hung an enormous crystal chandelier, each faceted crystal throwing off dazzling light. The seating was made up of plush redwood sofas, trimmed and inlaid with
gemstones.
The hall was divided into three numbered sections, one for each base.
Ark Two and Ark Three were already seated.
Hayley followed Nathaniel to Ark One’s section, and their group in green masks sat down together.
As soon as they settled, servers in fitted dresses came over with trays.
Desserts were set down first; beautifully plated pastries, muffins, and slices of tiramisu. Then came the wine, bottles of premium red.
Hayley had to admit, it was impressive.

It was hard to believe that the lives of these elites barely showed a dent after more than two and a half years into the apocalypse, while people outside kept dying in waves.
“Well?” Nathaniel asked lightly. “Feeling enlightened?”
Hayley stared at the spread. “Is all of this unlimited?”
“Yes.”
