Chapter 50
Hayley went ahead and bought Anthony’s house.
She carved a big “H” onto the mailbox at the front gate, marking it as officially hers. With that, her map in this area was finally complete.
“From today on, I’m your lord,” Hayley declared.
She told Anthony and Kate to guard the land, keep strangers out, and focus on farming here. In return, she promised to keep them safe and even hand out rewards later depending on their contributions.
Anthony and Kate nodded quickly, their faces full of excitement. This was exactly what they had been hoping for.
Before or after the apocalypse, ordinary people just wanted one thing-a safe place with someone strong enough to protect them.
Back then, the government played that role. Now that everything had collapsed, Hayley was the one stepping in. Her rule was real and absolute.
Hayley decided to take Anthony and Kate’s daughter, Cloudia Simmons, to pick up some supplies with her.
Since the girl was young, and her family didn’t have the means to store much, Hayley didn’t overload Cloudia. For the first trip, she gave Cloudia a bag of pasta, a crate of milk, a tray of fresh eggs, and about 20 pounds of pork.
She loaded the goods onto a cart and had Heart and Joker pull it, escorting Cloudia back home.
From then on, the family’s produce would be delivered daily.
Taking in residents was a bit like running a base after the apocalypse, but Hayley’s setup was different. Unlike other bases, she would never let newcomers into her shelter.
That was her private space. The people under her protection could only live within the boundaries of her land. This was the place where their hopes lay.
The next day, Cloudia arrived with her family’s first delivery.
A crate of vegetables, half bean sprouts and half cabbage.
