The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 503

Chapter 503

Ruth gave a subtle look.

The people behind her immediately pinned the screaming girl down.

In full view of everyone, Ruth crouched gracefully and pressed the syringe into the girl’s arm. She injected the entire dose.

The girl’s body began to convulse violently.

Based on our trials,Ruth said calmly, if the zombie virus inhibitor is injected within one minute of infection, there’s an 80% chance the subject will not mutate.

And the other 20%?someone from Ark Three asked.

Immediate death,Ruth replied with a smile.

The hall fell silent.

Eighty percent survival, twenty percent instant death. Either way, no mutation.

That alone sounded like salvation.

Everyone’s eyes locked onto the girl on the stage.

Seconds ticked by.

The convulsions slowed, then stopped.

The girl lay there in a pool of blood, her torn face soaking her clothes. After a long moment of stillness, she suddenly jerked her head up.

Aah!

Several women from Ark Three recoiled in fright, scrambling backward. The rest of the room leaned forward, eyes burning with focus.

The girl’s eyes were normal; not the pale, lifeless white of a zombie. Her pupils were black and steady. Her chest rose and fell as she breathed. She didn’t attack, and her body showed no signs of mutation.

The room went dead quiet.

You all saw that, right? This is our zombie virus inhibitor,Ruth said smoothly.

Clap, clap, clap.

Ark Two began applauding.

Ark Three followed.

Ark One joined in. Nathaniel clapped enthusiastically, clearly impressed.

The hall buzzed with awe at Ark Two’s technology.

Only Hayley didn’t clap.

She stared hard at the girl on the floor, her expression dark. Her perception swept over the girl’s body.

Something was wrong.

In Hayley’s awareness, living people showed as red. Zombies showed as white.

That girl hovered somewhere in between.

And the red was slowly fading.

Ark Two currently has only one zombie virus inhibitor available,Ruth announced. Starting bid, ten million crystal cores or two million tons of grain. Minimum increase, a hundred thousand tons!

The applause stopped instantly. Silence crushed the room again.

Two million tons of grain per dose.

Each Ark base had originally stockpiled about five million tons. This single dose demanded nearly half of a base

reserves.

No one spoke.

The materials required for the inhibitor are extremely rare,Ruth continued. Producing another will take at least a year.
