Chapter 52
“Ethan…!”
“Ethan!”
The other soldiers rushed to the edge of the pit. What they saw made their stomachs turn cold.
At the bottom of the trap were steel spikes and a massive bear trap, the kind designed to kill on contact.
This wasn’t anything like the civilian versions people used for hunting. This was heavy-duty, military-grade.
Anyone else would’ve been dead instantly.
Luckily, Ethan Parker was well-trained. The moment he sensed danger, he threw up his guard. Even so, the bear trap snapped shut on his leg, and both his hands had been pierced by spikes.
His teammates crouched carefully by the pit, working to pull him up without making the damage worse.
Just as they got him out, a pack of dogs burst through a side gate of the compound.
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
About nine of them came charging, led by a massive German shepherd with eyes like knives and teeth bared in a deadly snarl.
Summer’s fur bristled as it glared at the strangers, lips curled back to show long white fangs. Its claws scraped the dirt, ready to strike.
Only now did the soldiers truly understand what the sign, “Beware of Dogs”, meant. These weren’t pets. These were trained killers!
Just then, a woman’s voice rang out from a loudspeaker above the gate.
“This is your only warning. You’ve got one minute to get out. After that, I’m not responsible if the dogs tear you apart.”
The whole squad froze.
They exchanged quick looks, every eye drifting to the captain, who was bleeding badly.
The man’s face, streaked with camo paint, was unreadable except for the sharp glint in his eyes. He raised his voice toward the compound.
“We’re guards from Base K1. We’ve run into trouble. Could you help us out?”
