Chapter 522

Nathaniel paused before replying, Sure.

It sounded like nonsense, but for some reason, he liked listening to Hayley ramble.

Then I’ll bring the bestlooking manager we’ve got,he said, turning to the people behind him.

His gaze landed on Gideon, the youngest and most recently promoted.

You’re coming with me.

Gideon froze for half a second, then straightened. Yes, sir!

Nathaniel brought only Gideon and five Gifted guards.

Eleven people total.

They didn’t head straight for Ark Three. Instead, they flew to Ark Two first to meet up, then traveled together.

On the helicopter, everyone put on masks.

Hayley borrowed Nathaniel’s green one as usual.

The Ark Two group wore yellow masks. It was hard to tell whether their base director had come along.

They chatted warmly with Nathaniel.

Hayley stayed quiet, listening.

This whole thing with Ark Three is unfortunate, one of them said. They’re bound to blame our inhibitor from the auction, but we were clear about the risks. There was a 20% fatality rate. He didn’t turn, which proves the inhibitor works. If Ark Three causes trouble, we’re counting on you to back us up.

Nathaniel smiled behind his mask. That’s fair. Facts are facts. If there were no mutation, they don’t really have a case.

Exactly. You always see reason, Ark One,the man said. Our support shipment to your base should arrive soon. We have to work closely from now on.

Sure,Nathaniel replied.

Hayley had the picture by now.

Those two bases had already cut a quiet deal. Supplies in exchange for support. The conversation was just a polite double check.

While they were all smiling at each other, the helicopter crossed into a sea of mountains.

It was deep winter. Snow buried the peaks in thick white layers.

They circled for a long time before finally descending toward a massive structure built straight into the mountainside.

Hayley jumped out as soon as they landed.

She had finally reached Ark Three.

Ark One sat on open plains. Ark Two rose from the desert. Ark Three hid among the mountains.

She looked up at the towering base carved into stone, then glanced at the outer perimeter fence. Beyond it was nothing but a bottomless drop.
