The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 521

Chapter 521

When he heard Hayley, Liam laughed.

You really wanted to see him turn?

Of course,Hayley said. If he turned, it would’ve proved Ark Two’s inhibitor was fake. Once that happens, those two bases would’ve gone at each other for sure. I’ve been waiting for that exact spark.

She kept pacing as she talked.

After Samuel’s advice, she had been watching for a fuse to light.

She had already stirred things up over the inhibitor once. Then the outbreak hit, and Ark Two managed to skate by,

If Trevor had gone home and turned, Ark Two wouldn’t have been able to explain it away. Everyone would’ve known the inhibitor didn’t work.

War would’ve been guaranteed.

Instead, the guy just died. Clean and fast.

They said there was a 20% death rate. Of course, it landed on him.

Hayley circled again, clearly annoyed.

Liam reached out and caught her wrist, stopping her.

Not turning is still better,he said calmly. In places like that, once an outbreak starts, the ones who suffer aren’t the people at the top. It’s the folks at the bottom.

Hayley stopped.

Images flashed through her mind: the crushed laborers at Ark One, and the Women’s Unit at Ark Two, training until they could barely stand.

She let out a quiet sigh.

Yeah. You’re right. I’ll find another way to stir things up.

Her thinking had changed.

Back when she had nothing, everyone was an enemy. Now, her enemies were the dead and the bases powerful enough to threaten her.

Arks One, Two, and Three were her enemies.

However, the people trapped inside them were not.

Hayley wanted to rule the apocalypse so no one and no zombie could press a blade to her throat, not become the kind of monster who crushed the weak just because she could.

As she was thinking, a message popped up from Nathaniel.

Holly, you heard about Ark Three’s base leader, right? I’m heading over for the memorial. Want to come?

Memorial.

Hayley’s eyes lit up.

A memorial meant all three bases gathering again.

This time, it would be at Ark Three. Everyone in one place was the perfect setup to fan a few flames.

I’m in,she replied instantly.

From behind her, Liam spoke up. No. I’ll go. It’s dangerous out there. You stay here. I’ll handle the diplomatic side.

Hayley waved him off. Nope. You’re bad at causing trouble. I’m built for that kind of thing.

Liam stared at her, completely at a loss.

Hold the fort for me,she said cheerfully. I’m taking a short trip.

She went to gather people. This time, no dogs. She brought Leonard, Thomas, and, of course, Griffin.
