Chapter 526
“I’m fine,” the man said, forcing the words out through his cough.
“That’s not true!” The boy shot to his feet. “I’m going to find him!”
“Find who?” The man grabbed him tight. “Have you forgotten this base doesn’t allow sick people to exist?”
The boy froze. His fists clenched. He stared at his father’s worsening face, and tears finally spilled, unstoppable..
“But Dad,” he cried, “I can’t just let you suffer!”
“Hey. You want to save your dad?”
At that moment, a clear female voice cut in.
The boy looked up and, through his tears, saw a stunning young woman standing in front of them. She wore expensive–looking combat gear, clean, sharp, and confident.
Not someone you ever saw down here.
“Who are you?” he asked.
“I’ve got medicine that can save him,” Hayley said, arms crossed, “but it’s not free.”
“If you can save my dad, I’ll do anything,” the boy blurted out. “I’ll work myself to death for you!”
That was exactly what Hayley wanted to hear.
She looked at the boy as he wiped his tears, his face stubborn and fierce, then tossed him a small pill.
“From now on, you do exactly what I tell you. When I say move, you move.”
The boy caught the pill and didn’t hesitate to push it into his father’s mouth.
His father was coughing violently. The man clutched his mouth and chest, his lungs spasming. His pale face flushed red from the strain.
But after he swallowed the pill, the coughing slowly eased. The violent shaking faded.
His flushed face gradually calmed. More than that, color started returning to his skin.
“Cough… Max…”
“Dad!” Max Shepherd stared at him, stunned. “How do you feel?”
“I’m good,” his father said hoarsely. “My back doesn’t hurt anymore.”
Max snapped his head up and looked at the young woman standing over them, eyes wide with awe. One tiny pill, and his dad was better.
“I’m Max!” he said loudly. “From now on, whatever you tell me to do, I’ll do it!”
Hayley studied him, impressed. “So your name’s Max.”
“Yes! And this is my dad, Ryan.”
Hayley looked at the recovering man and nodded.
Ryan Shepherd, still cautious, looked back at her. “Miss… What do you want us to do?”

“Resistance?” Ryan’s eyes widened.
“You don’t want that?”
