Chapter 559
Hayley turned toward the window.
At some point, the zombies outside had scattered. The hallway beyond the glass was empty.
Suddenly, a book was smacked on her desk
“Focus on your book!”
Hayley blinked.
“Don’t look anywhere else. Just study!”
Andrew had already snapped into position at the front, spine straight, face serious. He started reciting at the top of his lun
“Aufgeben. Aufgeben…”
Hayley stared at the Dreutsch textbook in front of her. She had no words.
Then, she felt a gaze from outside the door.
It wasn’t just a look; it was pressure. The kind that used to make your shoulders lock up when a teacher stood behind you in school.
The stick wedged in the handle suddenly dropped. The handle pressed down, and the door swung open.
“Aufgeben…”
The four students raised their voices even louder, chanting the first word like their lives depended on it.
Footsteps entered the room.
Hayley focused, but there was nothing. Her mental energy couldn’t detect a presence. Whoever that was, it wasn’t a human o
zombie.
A chill crept up her spine.
She remembered the old woman at the quarry. Only a powerful mental–variant Gifted could erase themselves like that.
Then, the footsteps stopped behind her.
Tap, tap.
A wooden pointer struck her desk.
Her muscles tightened instantly.
Next to her, Griffin spoke up casually. “How do you read this one?”
Hayley looked at the first word on the page. Her palm was damp.
“Aufgeben.”
“Off…guh…ben?” Griffin tried.
“Aufgeben,” she repeated steadily.
He squinted at the English meaning printed beside it
“Auf…ge…ben,” he read slowly, following her pronunciation

The figure left the classroom, and the door closed again. Faint growls echoed from the hallway.
“Raarh… Raarh…”
The growls faded soon after, as the noise might disturb the lesson.
The four students at the front didn’t relax until the footsteps were completely gone. When they finally turned around, their shirts were soaked through with sweat.
“It’s okay,” Andrew said, breathing hard. “We’re safe for today.”
Hayley narrowed her eyes. “Why?”
Just then, a sharp scream ripped across the campus from outside. Andrew and the others rushed to the window.
