Andrew and Sydney were frozen stiff. By the time they strapped out of it, Hayley and Griffin had already rushed into the
classroom.
“Shut the door!” Hayley barked.
The senior girl zombie and the cafeteria worker were almost on top of them.
Andrew finally reacted.
Bang!
He yanked Sydney inside and slammed the door closed. Immediately, pounding exploded from the other side.
Bang. Bang. Bang!
The wooden door shook violently in its frame.
There was no lock on the inside, but the door opened outward, and with the zombies pushing from the hallway, they couldn’t pull it open.
Andrew grabbed a stick and jammed it hard against the handle, bracing it. The door rattled and thudded under the assault.
After a few seconds, when it didn’t break, Andrew slowly backed away. He retreated toward the windows, where the others we! waiting.
There were four teenagers in total, all around seventeen. They stared at Hayley like cornered animals.
“Are you the ones who smashed my truck?” Hayley asked calmly.
The four exchanged quick looks.
Sydney lifted her chin. “We just saved your life.”
“So what?” Hayley replied. “Did you hit my truck or not?”
The blunt tone caught them off guard. They huddled together, whispering urgently.
“We shouldn’t have helped them.”
“Yeah, they don’t look like good people.”
“What if they’re here to settle scores with us?”
Hayley listened, amusement flickering in her eyes.
The second she saw them open the door for her, she knew they weren’t bad kids. Three years into the apocalypse, and they still had that naive, clear eyed look.
“It’s just the four of you?” she asked
Andrew stepped forward, trying to look brave “We have others You can’t kill us
“Yeah! Mr. Ortega’s really strong, and some of us are Gifted”
“There are more of us than you think You’d better not try anything”
“And once this is over, you need to leave!”
They puffed themselves up, voices shaky but determined
Hayley smiled faintly “You know, really dangerous people don’t talk this mat
With a clean motion, she drew her blade and drove it down into the seat of a chair. The metal rang cold against the floor.
All four teenagers went pale and stumbled back, especially Andrew and Sydney.
They had just seen what that blade could do. Their minds blanked out as they stared at her.
Hayley rested a hand on the hilt. “I ask. You answer.”
They nodded immediately.
“How many people are there in your base?”
“Eight,” Andrew said.
“Eight total?”
“Seven students and our teacher, Mr. Ortega.”
“Where is he?”
“Out scavenging.”
“And the others?”
“They went to look for him.”
Hayley paused. “You live here?”
“Yeah. In this building.”
