Besides, Hayley even shared food with Andrew and Sydney; the kind of food no one saw anymore.
What had they done in return? They smashed her truck.
The more they thought about it, the clearer it became.
She wasn’t the bad guy.
Sydney and Andrew both looked at Hayley like she had just stepped out of a legend.
Hayley watched the two of them, eyes bright and painfully sincere. They were young, strong, and healthy; the perfect age for work.
“You two ever think about leaving?” she asked casually.
“Leaving?” Andrew blinked.
“Come with me. To my base.” Hayley smiled faintly. “The outside world has changed. A bunch of bases has formed a huge league. We work together against the zombies.”
She gestured at the empty containers beside them.
“What you just ate? That’s normal where I’m from.”
Their mouths practically fell open.
What? That kind of meal you couldn’t find anywhere was normal wherever Hayley came from?
“I’m giving you a real option. Think about it,” Hayley continued. “There are no zombie threats inside the walls. I’ll assign jobs for you, and you can eat as long as you werk. Simple as that.”
Andrew and Sydney felt like their brain had stalled.
No zombie threats. That alone sounded unreal.
And work meant food? Wasn’t the whole world just scavenging and gambling with your life now?
Before either of them could respond, Marvin’s voice rang out from behind the water tank.
“Alright, everyone. Come eat.”
The spell broke.
Andrew and Sydney jumped. “We should go back.”
“Go on,” Hayley said, already turning back to her own food
The two hurried over to their side. The second they stepped in, they were hit with it
“You traitors think you can just walk back?” someone snapped That was Ryker Peay, Erma’s shadow
Marvin frowned. “Ryker Watch your mouth”
“Mr. Ortega, ask them what they did! You told us not to move around. They can over there and ate with those two!!
“They’re not bad people!” Andrew and Sydney shot back at the same time
Ryker scoffed. “One meal and you switch sides? Did you forget what that woman did that’s patheti
Andrew’s fists clenched. “You’d better

“Enough.” Marvin’s voice cut through it. “Time to eat. Nobody argues,”
Ryker snorted and went to the big pot where the noodles were cooking. He scooped up a large ladleful and smirked.
“Some people already stuffed themselves on someone else’s food. No need to fight us for this.”
Andrew almost lunged at Ryker, but Marvin grabbed his arm before he could move. He and Sydney both looked at their teacher, frustration burning in their eyes.
