“How would I even be able to do that?” Marvin replied.
He was still breathing hard from the run.
Hayley stared at the locked door, unease creeping in.
If it wasn’t them… Then, what? A zombie?
Zombies didn’t lock doors. That wouldn’t make sense.
She had seen them shove doors open, but never lock one. Was that what a high–level one could do now?
Hayley stood there, thinking for a few seconds.
The bell rang again.
Marvin’s voice came sharp beside her. “Look! It’s here!”
Hayley stepped to the railing and looked down toward the third–floor skywalk.
The campus architecture had always been beautiful, and the connecting corridors were the highlight. The sun was setting n casting a red glow across the left side of the walkway.
From the direction of the administration building, a figure stepped into view.
A male zombie in a gray polo shirt, broad–shouldered with a thick build. It limped slightly as it crossed toward the classroom wing. It was balding, its hairline pushed nearly to the back of its head.”
A shiny dome reflected the fading light, ringed by a fringe of curled hair. Bulging eyes sat behind cracked black frame glasses
Except for its right leg, its body was disturbingly intact. Below the knee, it had been gnawed down to uneven bone. The woun had long ago dried and blackened, tight and dark like cured meat.
“That was our vice principal,” Marvin said quietly. “Every afternoon, it patrols the classroom building.”
The zombie stopped mid–stride, as if it sensed live humans.
It lifted its cloudy white eyes. Through shattered lenses, it looked up toward them.
“Raarh! Raarh!”
Its mouth opened wide, and excitement twisted across its dead face. It broke into a run, dragging its Saltfeaten leg, arms swinging hard.
“It’s extremely dangerous. We should.” Marvin started
Hayley didn’t wail She grabbed Griffin and headed straight for the stairwell
Marvin just stared after her
She was actually going to meet the zombie head on!
“Mr. Ortega, what do we do?” one of the quieter girls whispered, panic rising in her voice
Fear pressed in from every direction
The high level zombie was closing in Behind them, every locked classroom was shaking as the trapped students slammed against doors and windows Outside, more zombies were flooding toward the buildingg
It felt like the entire campus was waking up

“We should go back!” the girl said, almost crying.
“No.” Marvin’s voice steadied. “If we turn back now, we die here. We have to follow them.”
He meant it.
This was their one chance to leave.
He led the group down the stairs at a quick pace. When they reached the third floor, the corridor was silent and empty.
