Chapter 577
Hayley felt the tidal wave of footsteps through her perception before she even heard them.
She drove the saber down harder, with zero hesitation.
The blade bit into the Zombie King’s neck again, but when it hit the spine, it was like striking solid granite.
Sparks flew under the force of her strength, then came a sharp crack.
Right as the spine split, the saber that had followed her for nearly three years snapped clean in half.
Her blade was gone.
The Zombie King, reduced to little more than a head and torso, couldn’t scream anymore. It made wet, choking sounds, trying to roll away.
Hayley wasn’t about to let that happen. She reached into her inventory, yanked out a pressure cooker, and slammed it over the zombie’s head like a helmet.
With her other hand, she scooped the lid underneath and twisted. It locked with a click.
Hayley tossed the sealed pot to Griffin.
“Hold it tight. We’re moving.”
Griffin stared at the pot in his arms, then hugged it obediently.
Living zombies couldn’t go into the inventory. You had to carry them.
Hayley glanced at the broken saber in her hand.
Three years…
That blade had seen a lot. She would be lying if she said she wouldn’t miss it.
She picked up the other half, slipped on her full coverage polymer gloves, and gripped the jagged end like a dagger.
“Stick close if you want to live!” she said over her shoulder.
“Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
The roar outside swelled.
Two zombies burst through the restroom entrance first, a boy and a girl in old uniforms.
Their bodies were long past fresh decay, and their faces were chewed down to ruin. One was missing half a forehead and eye, while the other’s lower face was gone from nose to chin.
Under the red glow of the setting sun, their wounds looked even worse.
The zombies burst through the restroom entrance, mouths gaping like blood slicked abysses, their gray, clouded eyes fixed hungrily ahead.

Hayley drove the short blades in both her hands straight into the skulls of the lunging zombies. The moment th zombies dropped, she broke into a sprint toward the hallway.
Zombies were already rushing in from both ends of the corridor.
The zombie feast had begun.
“Go!” she shouted.
Behind her, Marvin hustled the students forward.
Two of them had injured legs. Marvin hooked an arm under each and half-dragged, half-carried them along.
As they passed the first stall doorway, a wet choke came from inside.
Adele’s corpse jerked upright on the toilet.
Her body was drenched in blood. Deep gouges lined her face where fingers had torn flesh apart. Her abdomen wa hollowed out, and her intestines hung over its coat. Half-eaten organs glistened in the dim light.
“Raarh!”
Blood spilled from zombie Adele’s mouth, neat rows of teeth stained crimson as a guttural, zombie-like sound crawled up from the abyss of her throat.
Her gray-white zombie eyes snapped open. She twisted her limbs and lunged toward the students in front.
“Run!”
Marvin shoved the injured students he was supporting forward, then grabbed the slower ones behind him, desperately pushing everyone toward the exit.
Zombie Adele leapt out at them.
Marvin snatched the baseball bat Adele had used when she was alive and jammed it straight into her mouth, swinging hard and knocking her back into the restroom.
The two or three seconds bought enough time.
The last of the students stumbled past him and into the hallway.
