Rat-tat-tat!

Heavy cleavers dropped while suppressed gunfire cracked through the night at the same time.
The zombies blocking their path fell like rows of cut grass, cleared away in waves.
The armored vehicle never even slowed. It rolled straight through the sea of bodies, heading toward the massive steel wall rising ahead like a fortress.
Floodlights mounted along the wall lit the road for them, bright beams cutting through the darkness.
As they reached the entrance, the enormous steel gate groaned and lifted open.
Hayley’s vehicle stopped at the checkpoint. A tall, broad-shouldered man in tactical gear stood beside the passenger door, rifle resting easily in his arms.
“Well, look who’s back,” Milo said.
“Yeah, made it,” Hayley replied.
He leaned closer, peering into the vehicle. “Not a bad haul.”
Six faces sat crammed into the back seat, staring at him with confusion and caution. They looked like a group of rabbits spotting a lion for the first time.
The man radiated danger without even trying.
“That’s nothing,” Hayley said, lifting the pressure cooker in her hands. “The real prize is right here.”
Milo sniffed the air immediately. “Zombie head?”
“Yep. Level 4.”
His eyes lit up instantly. He gave her a thumbs-up.
“Damn impressive.”
Even though his ability level had reached level 5, taking on a level 4 zombie alone still wasn’t something he would treat lightly.
Seeing Hayley casually carrying the head back in a pressure cooker made him want to applaud her on the spot. She had always been unstoppable.
“I’m heading in. Got things to handle.”
“Go on.”
He stepped aside. The guards along the checkpoint straightened, saluting as her vehicle passed through.

After clearing the first defensive line, the people in the back seat were completely stunned. They stared wide-eyed at Hayley as soldiers saluted her departure.
Who exactly was this woman? She clearly wasn’t ordinary!
As the vehicle continued deeper into the territory, the darkness outside slowly changed. Fields appeared on both sides of the road.
“Mr. Ortega… Is that wheat?” someone whispered.
Marvin adjusted his cracked glasses and leaned forward to look. “It is. Wheat fields…and corn, too. Even greenhouse crops.”
His voice shook with disbelief.
How could large-scale farming exist again?
Where were the zombies?
How had anyone managed to reclaim this much land in a world crawling with the dead?
Didn’t they worry about attacks?
Then, ahead of them, lights appeared.
“Mr. Ortega! Look! There are lights up ahead!” Sydney cried.
In the darkness, they saw one light.
Then another.
Then, rows of them.
Then, they were greeted by an entire ocean of illumination that belonged only to human civilization.
“It’s…a city,” Marvin whispered, stunned.
A real city,
Humanity had returned to city life.
They rode into Aecraton like travelers stepping into another era, overwhelmed by everything around them.
The farther they drove, the wider their eyes became.
Eventually, none of them could even speak.
Clean streets stretched in every direction. People walked home from work. Families strolled calmly under streetlights. Children played safely outside. A lively night market filled an entire avenue.
Food stalls lined the street, selling hot baked rolls, chicken soup, stir fried meals, grilled sausages, hearty stews, and skewers sizzling over open flames.
Everyone inside the vehicle stared in absolute disbelief.
Had they crossed into another world?
The harvester finally stopped in a plaza at the center district.
