Chapter 589

After registering with Robert, Marvin and the others were assigned housing.

Robert personally guided them through how life worked inside Haylight League.

“There are plenty of empty homes right now,” Robert said. “You can pick wherever you want to live. Once you decide, I’ll lock it in for you. Housing here is free.”

The group stared at the rows of houses stretching down the street, available for them to choose from.

Their first wave of shock hit instantly.

Housing inside the Haylight League cost nothing. Residents only paid a daily tax of ten points. Plus, new arrivals didn’t even pay taxes during their first month.

Free housing! That sounded more unreal than life before the apocalypse.

“But daily living runs on points,” Robert continued. “You’ll use points in our stores for everything. Food, drinks, clothes, supplies. Starting tomorrow, your workplaces will provide three meals a day, so don’t worry about going hungry while you get settled.”

Everyone inhaled sharply again.

Meals were included, too? What kind of paradise had they walked into?

Right on cue, several stomachs growled loudly.

Robert laughed. “Are you hungry? My treat. Let’s grab something to eat.”

“We still have some supplies with us,” Marvin quickly said.

He had already begun figuring out how the League operated. Everything here ran on points.

Points had to be valuable, probably hard to earn. Being fed and sheltered already felt like more than enough. Letting someone else pay for their meal felt wrong.

“You still have supplies?” Robert adjusted his glasses and looked at Marvin curiously.

“Yes,” Marvin said honestly, pulling open his jacket to reveal several packs of instant noodles stuffed inside. “Do we need to turn these in?”

Years of real-world experience told him how survivor bases usually worked. 1

Once you entered a structured settlement, personal resources typically became communal property. The base provided protection, while residents contributed what they had,

Especially in a place so well-run, handing everything over wouldn’t even feel unreasonable.

Robert glanced at the crushed noodles barely holding their shape anymore and shook his head.

“We stopped mandatory resource collection a long time ago. If your supplies were in good condition, you could trade them with Hayz for points. But these?” He chuckled. “Honestly, you might as well save them for pig feed.”

The group froze.

Pig feed?

This was food they had survived on, the thing they treated like treasure during the apocalypse.

Here, it was animal feed.

“Come on,” Robert said warmly. “Dinner’s on me.”

He led them to a busy street market lined with food stalls.

Without hesitation, he ordered five dishes.

Glazed pork belly, stir-fried beef strips, scrambled eggs, garlic chicken, and sautéed fresh vegetables. Each plate. arriving at the table made Marvin and the others stare wider and wider.

This was the apocalypse.

How could food like this still exist?

“Robert, that’s enough,” Marvin said quickly. “That’s a lot of food. It must cost a fortune.’

He looked around. Plenty of people were eating at the market, but nobody else was ordering this much at once.

It had to be expensive.

“Don’t worry,” Robert said with an easy smile. “Haylight Base is very well supplied. Even inside the League, the wealthiest base.”

The group exchanged stunned looks, unsure what to say.

“You all got lucky joining our boss’s base,” Robert continued proudly. “Out of all 58 bases in the League, Haylight Base has the best pay, best benefits, and best living conditions. Our boss is the richest person here, so naturally, we are, too. The combined wealth of the other 57 bases still doesn’t match ours.”

Nobody knew how to respond. They could only stare at him in disbelief.

“So Ms. Reid is also the League’s…”

“Yes,” Robert said immediately, pride shining on his face. “She’s the League’s commander, too. Our boss is the most incredible person I’ve ever met.”

leadership.

In a broken world filled with danger and chaos, she had carved out a clean, safe refuge for humanity.

To him, Hayley wasn’t just a leader anymore. She was practically a god. 2

Marvin’s group sat there, equally shaken.

The person who saved them wasn’t just someone capable. She wasn’t merely part of Haylight League.

She was the League’s commander and the wealthiest, most powerful leader in the entire League!

One steaming dish after another arrived at the table, fresh off the skillet, filling the air with mouthwatering

aroma.

Sydney and Andrew stared at the overflowing plates and suddenly remembered the meal Hayley had shared with them earlier.

She had said this was normal life for Haylight League residents. She hadn’t exaggerated at all.
