The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 600

Chapter 600

Nathaniel stared at the table spread in front of him, and an old memory surfaced.

It was the dinner he had once hosted for Hayley.

Now, he finally understood her reaction back then.

The food his base proudly served as a luxury feast didn’t even compare to what her people ate every single day

No wonder she hadn’t been impressed. Why would someone living like this ever look twice at him?

The realization left a bitter taste in his chest.

Hayley’s voice broke the silence. “Go ahead. Sit.”

Everyone took their seats.

The moment they sat down, Dean spoke first.

“We’ll stay here tonight. Tomorrow morning, arrange transportation and send us back immediately.”

Hayley looked at him. “Why the rush?”

“Are you planning to keep us detained here?”

“Detained?” she said lightly. “Am I not treating you well?”

“Drop the act. You confiscated our weapons and comms and won’t let us leave. If that’s not detention, what is?”

Hayley smiled faintly and stood up.

Dean straightened in his chair, growing even more arrogant. “We’re willing to overlook your rude behavior this time, but you need to apologize. Also, you will personally escort us back. Otherwise, we’ll hold you accountable.”

Hayley walked up to him.

The next second, her hand snapped across his face and sent him flying sideways.

“I haven’t even settled accounts with you yet, and you’re threatening me?”

She stepped closer, voice sharp.

“Let me ask you something. You showed up here with a full team, no notice, and without us ever giving you our location. What exactly were you planning?”

Smack!

“This is the apocalypse. Don’t pretend you don’t know that looks like a hostile incursion. You’re lucky I didn’t blast you out of the sky completely. If I had wiped you out, it would’ve been your own damn fault.”

Smack!

Each sentence came with another slap. Dean’s head rang so hard that he couldn’t get a word out.

“Hayley,” Constant finally cut in. “That’s enough. We’re all standing right here, and you’re hitting our manager in front of us? You’d better stop pushing your luck!”

Right after he spoke, another sharp crack echoed.

Hayley sent Constant stumbling backward with a slap.

“Me? Arrogant?” she shot back.

“You people are the arrogant ones! I crossed miles of hell to rescue your people, and you turned around and tried to feed us to zombies. And today, you fly straight into my territory without warning, acting like you own the sky. Do you think you can act more arrogantly than me?”

She pointed at him.

“At your age, you should know better. Instead, you keep stirring trouble everywhere, hiding behind seniority like the world owes you respect.”

Her palm landed several more times across Constant’s face.

Hayley believed in equal treatment. It didn’t matter if someone was 99 or barely old enough to walk. If they/ deserved a hit, they got one.

After finishing with both men, her gaze shifted toward Nathaniel.

Nathaniel met her eyes calmly. His lips moved.

“Well deserved.”
