Chapter 639

As Hayley’s team moved Tower, the building grew darker.

With the power out, the commercial tower stayed dim even in broad daylight.

Sunlight filtered through the glass exterior walls, but it only lit the narrow strip of floor near the windows.

The elevators and stairwells were located in the center of the building

The elevators had been dead for years. Everyone switched on flashlights and continued down the stairwell beside them.

Step by step, Hayley’s team descended, clearing every floor as they went.

They were lucky.

Aside from the female zombie they encountered on the roof level, the next ten floors were empty, not a single zombie was present.

That changed when they reached the 15th floor.

Bang!

The moment they stepped onto the landing, the emergency door slammed violently from the other side..

A zombie in a security uniform threw itself against the door.

The guard’s face had been completely destroyed. It looked like someone had smashed it flat with a blunt weapon.

Its nose had collapsed deep into the bones of its face. Its left eye had burst open, the socket filled with a wet crimson mess where the pale zombie pupil should have been.

Its right eye remained intact, staring through the door at them.

The moment the guard zombie appeared, eight more zombies/rushed up behind it. They shoved their arms through the narrow crack in the locked fire door, their claws scraping across the metal.

Screeeeech!

The sound scratched at the nerves like nails on glass. The zombies clawed harder, frantic at the scent of living flesh

“Boss,” Derek said, glancing at the door, “it’s locked.”

Every door they had passed so far had been open.

This one, however, was locked.

Hayley stepped forward through the group.

Blood stains covered both sides of the fire door. Beyond the snarling zombies, she could see part of the hallway Inside:

Pop!

Eight skulls burst beneath the pressure, and crystal cores popped free from their shattered heads.

One zombie twitched, still alive.

Hayley stomped again, and it went silent.

No one behind her reacted. They were used to their boss handling things this way.

Hayley stepped inside. Seeing that, the others followed.

Then they saw the elevator, and everyone’s scalp prickled.

A man’s corpse kneeled in front of the elevator doors, his hands still braced against the metal, as if he had tried to force them open.

Inside the elevator was a pile of bodies, a whole mass of them.

Years of decay had turned them into something unrecognizable. The bodies were fused together, the faces, arms, legs, and everything else.
