The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 645

Chapter 645

After the world fell apart, people like Ellen were everywhere.

Give them the smallest bit of kindness, and they would cling to it like a drowning person grabbing driftwood, squeezing every last drop out of it.

The moment the kindness stopped, they would treat you like an enemy for life. In their eyes, everyone owed them something.

Hayley glanced toward the stairwell.

Donnie and Charlie were helping a thin woman to her feet.

“Jasmine, you shouldn’t have bothered with Ellen,” Donnie muttered. “She’s crazy. Always jealous of somebody.”

Charlie nodded. “You never should’ve helped her in the first place. You save her life, and what do you get? She spends all day talking trash about you.”

Jasmine didn’t answer them. She simply raised a hand in a small gesture and slowly walked upstairs by herself.

Just then, Ellen’s voice rang out from above. “Jasmine! Go water the plants downstairs!”

“What’s wrong with you?” Donnie snapped immediately. “You just shoved Jasmine down the stairs, and now you want her watering the crops?”

“If she doesn’t go, who will?” Ellen shot back. “If the potatoes dry out, what are we supposed to eat?”

“I’ll go,” Jasmine said quietly. Holding the railing, she began making her way back down the stairs.

Donnie frowned. “I’ll come with you.”

“Donnie, Theo told you to watch this floer,” Ellen cut in sharply. If you leave and those outsiders wander around, who’s taking responsibility if something happens to the base?”

Donnie had no answer to that.

Ellen then waved to two other women. “Come on. Let’s go help Jasmine with the work.”

The three women walked over and followed Jasmine downstairs.

Once they were gone, there wasn’t much left to watch. Hayley turned toward the zipline and tapped her headset.

“How’s it going over there?”

“We’re inside the Defense Office. Should find the files within 30 minutes.”

“Alright,” Hayley replied.

The building across the gap was quiet now. Elam and the others had disappeared deeper inside

Below them, the zombie swarm had gradually calmed. With no more noise echoing above, the restless crowd slowly settled Instead of pushing and clawing like before.

Suddenly, a window on the fifth floor directly below Hayley flew open. A flower pot tambled out and dropped straight insmust the

In an instant, the zombie horde below erupted again like water hitting a boil.

They surged toward the falling pot, bodies piling over one another as they clawed forward. Some even began climbing Zombies stacked on top of zombies, forming a grotesque ladder.

Among them, a speed-enhanced mutant zombie moved with disturbing agility.

It stepped on the heads of the others, gripping cracks in the glass exterior. Its sharp claws dug into the aluminum window frames as it scrambled upward.

In seconds, it had reached the height of the fourth floor. It locked onto the head sticking out above, then released its grip and launched itself upward, jaws snapping wide.

The rotting face and foul breath rushed closer in a blur.

At the last second, the woman jerked her head back inside.

Bang!

The zombie slammed hard into the window frame.

A moment later, it dropped like a stone, falling straight back into the swarm below.

Donnie and Charlie came running down the stairs at the same time.
