Chapter 656
Warren had stayed that night for one reason: he wanted to make it clear to Osbert that Jasmine was his now, and that there was no chance for Osbert to come back into the picture.
Meanwhile, Ellen had stayed because she had been waiting for the right moment to wedge herself in.
The virus outbreak had started outside the building.
That night, everyone had been working past midnight. Warren and Ellen went downstairs to the convenience stope to grab coffee and snacks for the team.
That was when they ran into the security guard. He was injured, and the fear on his face was unmistakable.
They helped him into the elevator that required a keycard to access the upper floors.
But by the time they reached the company office, the guard had already turned.
Right there inside the elevator, the guard mutated.
Warren fought him in the confined space, and in the struggle, he realized the guard was turning into a zombie. He barely managed to subdue the guard and locked him inside the elevator, and then he rushed to find Jasmine.
But when he reached the office, he saw something that lit a fire in his chest.
Osbert was there, grabbing Jasmine’s arm. He was demanding explanations, refusing to let her go.
Warren’s anger exploded.
At that exact moment, someone else in the office suddenly collapsed.
Warren immediately understood that that person was about to turn as well, but he pretended not to know anything and quickly sent Jasmine away.
Then he told Osbert to take the person to the hospital.
The moment the elevator doors opened, chaos erupted. Zombies flooded their floor.
In the middle of the panic, Warren told Osbert the truth about the outbreak.
He said they needed time to escape.
Osbert believed him.
He held the elevator entrance by himself, fighting the zombies while Warren grabbed the security guard’s keys.
And then, Warren ran.
He took Jasmine, Ellen, as well as Donnie and Charlie, who followed.
Everyone else was left behind because some of them might have heard what Warren had told Osbert.
Even if they hadn’t, Warren wasn’t willing to risk it.
It was better to leave them and only bring people he was sure about.
Later, he tried to escape the building.
But the moment they reached the lower floors, it was obvious. The outbreak had already exploded outside.

Zombies filled the streets.
Warren thought it over quickly, and then he made a decision.
They stayed.
There was no real difference between being trapped at home and being trapped at the office.
At least here, there were supplies.
Warren led the group back to the convenience store and cleared it out completely. They even locked the entrance so no one else could get inside.
Later, other survivors from the building slowly appeared.
Since Warren already controlled most of the supplies and had awakened as a strength-enhanced Gifted, he naturally became the leader.
Calling it a base was generous; it was more like a loose gathering of survivors.
Because there were so few people and they still had a basic supply of necessities, their little base, or more accurately, a small survivor gathering spot, had almost no internal conflicts.
Everyone was trapped inside the building and couldn’t get out, while people outside had no reason to come into the office tower in the nearly deserted city center to scavenge supplies.
With no one entering and no way for them to leave, their group existed like an isolated island, somehow managing to scrape by and stay alive in the apocalypse up until now.
If the zombies hadn’t begun mutating, and if the building hadn’t finally been breached, they probably could have kept going like that.
Even so, there was still a clear hierarchy among them.
Warren controlled the supplies, so he ate the best food and used the best things.
And his body showed it.
