The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 657

Chapter 657

“Larry”

Jasmine screamed from Warren’s arms.

She watched in horror as the man Warren had just kicked, Larry Robson, tumbled down the stairs.

The moment he hit the landing, a zombie lunged at him. Its claws slashed toward his eyes, Then, its/teeth sarık into his neck.

A spray of bright red blood splattered across the pale ceiling.

The zombies chasing behind them immediately stopped pursuing the others.

The scent of blood was too strong.

They swarmed Larry, tearing into him.

Even Theo was there.

Theo, who had once been his teammate and friend, was now a zombie. His gray-white eyes stared blankly as he lifted his grotesque head and clamped his jaws around Larry’s leg.

He bit down hard. His jaw muscles bulged as he chewed through flesh. Then he jerked his head back violently, and a whole leg tore free. The muscle and bone ripped away together.

Larry’s scream echoed through the stairwell.

“Warren, you monster! You monster!”

Jasmine beat her fists against Warren’s chest as she watched the blood-soaked scene.

Warren glared down at her.

“I’m running out of patience with you,” he snarled. “If you don’t behave, I’ll throw you down there, too.”

Jasmine’s red, tear-filled eyes slowly went cold. She stared at him silently, then looked back down the stairwell one last time.

Larry’s body was barely recognizable now. The zombies had torn him apart.

But suddenly, his ruined body stiffened. His eyes turned gray-white.

“Raarh!”

They had reached the 24th floor.

Only ten people remained now, including Warren and Jasmine.

Everyone ran as if their lives depended on it.

Because they did.

When they got to the 25th floor, they felt as if their legs were filled with lead. Every step burned their muscles.

Behind them, the stairwell was packed with zombies.

The creatures never tired.

If the survivors slowed even a little, the zombies would only close the gap faster and faster.

Soon, the distance between them shrank to a single floor.

They got to the 26th floor.

Now, the zombies were barely half a floor behind.

The people at the back could almost feel claws reaching for them. They couldn’t die here.

Run!

Every person forced out the last bit of strength they had left.

Twenty-seventh floor.

Suddenly, light flooded their vision.

The rooftop door was open.

Fresh air and the roaring wind from above rushed down the stairwell, sweeping away the stench of blood and decay.

Donnie and Charlie burst through first.

When they saw the helicopter circling overhead, it felt like salvation. A rope ladder hung down in front of them.

“Anyone who made it this far, climb up,” Hayley’s voice called down.

Donnie and Charlie grabbed the ladder immediately.

As they climbed, they glanced back.

Ellen was right behind them.

Behind her came Warren and Jasmine.

And behind them…

Warren glanced at the rope ladder, then he set Jasmine down.

Without hesitation, he turned and slammed the rooftop door shut.

The two people still behind them would be trapped. 1

The zombies were almost there. If the door stayed open, the zombies would rush onto the roof as well.

In that case, Warren himself might not escape.

He didn’t hesitate for a second.
