Chapter 669

Scott studied Hayley’s serious expression.

“When I saw your League vehicle earlier, the first thing I thought about was rescuing you,” he said calmly. “And this is the thanks I get? You don’t trust me. Your people really aren’t here. I only found your truck.”

“Scott,” Hayley said flatly, “do you really think I’m gonna believe that?”

Scott adjusted his glasses slightly, “If I’m not mistaken, you’re the one who came to my base looking for help. Isn’t that right?”

Hayley narrowed her eyes. “What exactly are you trying to pull?”

“If I were you,” Scott said with a faint smile, “I’d probably start by saying something nice. Maybe even ask me politely for help.”

Hayley just stared at him, completely speechless.

Behind her, Thomas spoke up.

“We’ll pay you in supplies,” he said. “We can trade.”

Scott glanced at Thomas.

Before he could say anything, the man standing behind him snorted. “Heh. Tomorrow Base doesn’t run short on supplies.”

Scott looked back at Hayley. “The only person who knows where your people are is me. If you don’t want my help, feel free to leave. Take your time searching. I won’t interfere.

“Scott, darling,” Hayley said sweetly, her tone suddenly dripping with flattery, “I’ve always thought you were incredible. Honestly, you’re the most handsome and capable man I’ve ever met. No competition.”

She clasped her hands together.

“A guy as amazing as you must’ve already found my people, right? Why don’t you return them to me?”

Hayley had always known when to give in.

A smart woman didn’t get hung up on pride.

Sometimes, you play the underdog before taking the throne. There was nothing embarrassing about it.

Scott let out a quiet laugh.

The smile on his lips widened, but the look in his eyes sharpened. He stared straight at Hayley, something almost unhinged flickering deep in his gaze.

“Say that again,” he murmured. “What did you just call me?”

“Scott, darling,” Hayley repeated in a syrupy voice.

Scott leaned down slightly. “Then I’ll tell you something: your people really aren’t here.”

Hayley froze, completely at a loss for words.

Her fist started to rise.

If talking didn’t work, violence usually did.

“But,” Scott continued calmly, “I do know where they are.”

Hayley stopped. “Where?”

“I can take you to them,” Scott said. “But what do I get out of it?”

Hayley locked eyes with him. “What do you want?”

“Everything you owe me,” Scott said quietly. “Give it all back.”

Hayley fell silent.

Her expression darkened by the second.

Was he talking about the crystal cores she had taken from him, or the people she’d pulled away from his control

How exactly was she supposed to repay that?

As far as Hayley was concerned, she hadn’t done anything wrong.

If she could go back and do it again, she would make the exact same choices.

At the beginning, she had genuinely planned to work with Scott. The idea had been to unite several settlements and fight the apocalypse together. She would even pull his whole base out of Crestford.

But Scott was never someone she could control. His ambition was too big.

She had originally intended to leave him in the wetlands outside Crestford and end things there. Instead, he had dragged her deeper into his mess.

And once she got involved, it only confirmed what she already suspected.

Scott was not someone she could cooperate with. Worse, he had targeted her people. That crossed a line.

So yes, she had screwed him over.

And she didn’t regret it. Not even a little. She would make the same call 100 times over.

Running into him again now was just bad luck.

If Scott really wanted repayment, there was nothing she could give him.

And if he insisted on settling old scores? Then they would just have to tear into each other and see who walked
