Chapter 672
Seriously? She had one cracker yesterday afternoon, and she waser’s hungry now?
Hayley almost swore out loud. “Griffin, get her something to eat.”
“Got it.” Griffin unzipped his pack and pulled out a few boxed meals.
They actually came straight from his inventory. Each box had five sides, with a bed of rice. Steam curled up the moment he opened them.
“Hey, kid. Come eat.”
Winona’s eyes went wide. She stared at the food, then looked at Hayley, wide-eyed. She couldn’t believe this was for her.
“Why are you staring at me?” Hayley asked. “If you’re with me, you don’t need to watch your back all the time. No one here’s going to mess with you.”
Warmth flooded through Winona’s chest, something she hadn’t felt in a long time.
“Go on, eat,” Griffin said as he tore open a set of utensils for her. “Stick with us long enough, and you’ll get used to it. Captain Gorgeous is the best there is. She takes care of her own.”
He lowered his voice. “All that edge she’s got? That’s for outsiders. Not us. She’s a good person.”
Winona nodded hard, gripping the utensils. Then she lowered her head and dug in, shoveling food into her mouth like she hadn’t eaten in days.
Off to the side, Scott quietly watched everything
A good person?
Really?
He looked at Hayley, the corner of his lips lifting slightly, something restrained and restless flickering in his eyes. After about an hour on the road, the convoy came to a stop. They had reached a canyon wedged between two ridges. The moment they arrived, they spotted another vehicle ahead, half-stuck at the edge of a cliff.
“Boss, that’s from Convoy Seven,” Leonard said immediately.
He was the first to jump out of the car, jogging over to the vehicle with one set of wheels hanging off the edge. He leaned in to check inside, his voice tightening,
“It’s Derek’s truck!”
He circled the vehicle, searching carefully.
There was no one inside.
Convoy Seven had two vehicles and five people.
Now, one of those vehicles was left here, the front half hanging over the drop.
The cliff beneath them was about 160 feet down, and below that stretched a dense field of wild grass, about waist- high. The grass grew thick and tangled, hiding any trace of human presence.
Hayley turned to Scott. “When did you find this place?”
“Yesterday afternoon.”
“Did you see anyone?”
“Nope.” Scott walked over at an easy pace. “It was just like this when I got here. No one around.”
Just then, Leonard spotted something glinting in the grass below,
A backpack with reflective material.
He immediately climbed down through a break in the cliff, moving fast. Within seconds, he reached the bottom and ran into the grass, picking it up.
“Boss! It’s Derek’s pack!”
Hearing him, Hayley followed.
One by one, they climbed down into the overgrown field.
Down there, they found more of Derek’s team’s belongings. Backpacks, communicators, even…guns.
“Why would they ditch their guns?” Leonard frowned, unease creeping into his voice.
A soldier never abandons their weapon.
Unless something had gone very wrong.
Hayley stood amon
