Chapter 68
Leonard knew Hayley had already done everything she could.
She wasn’t a doctor, after all. When she’d promised to save Liam, she’d only meant keeping him alive, nothing, more. Whatever happened next, they still owed her their thanks.
With that, he carried about 40 pounds of beef and 20 pounds of potatoes outside.
Hayley glanced one last time at the man lying on the floor, then followed him out.
The moment she turned away, the man’s fingers twitched.
Outside, Derek and the others were buzzing with excitement, as if it were Christmas morning.
Working together, they unloaded four big delivery trucks–over 2,000 packages in total! Some boxes were huge, others tiny, and they stacked them all neatly in rows on the open ground for Hayley to inspect.
When Leonard came out with the food, everyone jumped in to help–some washed vegetables, some scrubbed pots, others set up tables.
Hayley walked straight over to the mountain of boxes and started tearing them open one by one. She waved Leonard over to help her.
By the time dinner was ready, they had already gone through most of the packages.
It was honestly the most fun she’d ever had. It was like opening thousands of mystery boxes all at once.
They found over 600 edible items inside, mostly snacks–chips, cookies, cupcakes, soda, candy–basically everything you could dream of.
Hayley even opened more than ten cases of cola and lemon–lime soda. Feeling generous, she handed out a bottle to everyone there.
Of course, some stuff had gone bad, such as fresh foods that spoiled ages ago, so she just tossed those aside without a second thought.
There were also shampoos, soaps, bedding, and…some items she pretended not to notice.
Hayley wasn’t picky. If it was still usable and not rotten, she’d take it. Everything had value.
They even found a ton of cat and dog food, which came as a surprise to Hayley. She didn’t usually feed Summer and the rest that kind of stuff–the dogs just ate whatever she ate but she decided to keep the pet food for emergencies.
They also found clothes, shoes, socks, several brand–new smartphones, a few laptops, and even some furniture pieces.
It was a gold mine of random treasures. The thrill of tearing into box after box was weirdly addictive.
Hayley was in such a good mood that night that she actually sat down to eat with everyone.
“What are you looking at?” she said, smirking. “It’s my food. I’m allowed to eat it.”
“I thought you’d be off eating something fancy with Leonard again,” Derek teased.
“I’ll eat however the hell I want. It’s none of your business.” Hayley scooped up her food with a ladle.
+25 Bonus
Everyone had their own little pot of pasta. Thankfully, Hayley had raided an appliance store months ago, those electric pots had turned out to be lifesavers.
She ladled a big scoop of juicy beef and tender potatoes into her pot.
