The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 69

Chapter 69

Everyone agreed that everything Hayley served was amazing.

A few pieces of beef and potatoes with a spoonful of pasta, soaked in that rich, savory sauceit was so good that they could die right there and be content.

It was absolute heaven.

Boss, you didn’t get much! Here, take mine.

Hayley had eaten about half of the pasta in her pot before losing interest. Watching them fight over food like wild animals kind of killed her appetite. She felt that there was too much drool everywhere.

Maybe she should just eat alone from now on.

Then, Leonard slid a plate piled high with casserole toward her.

This part hasn’t been touched,he said.

Leonard always ate neatly, even when he was starving. He liked to portion his food carefully and take his time. The plate he handed over was the first one he’d served himself, still mostly untouched.

Hayley glanced at it and shook her head. Nah, you eat it. I’m full.

The moment she said that, everyone turned to stare at her.

You’re really full, Boss?

Don’t hold back on our account!

We eat fast; that’s just how we are! Here, you can have these!

Gavin offered

up the remaining food. There were just some gravy and potato chunks left, but he held it out with

Forget it.Hayley looked at the greasy mix and lost her appetite completely.

If you’re not gonna eat, can we, uhfinish your portion?Derek asked carefully, eyeing the pot of pasta she’d left behind.

He looked just like her dog begging for scraps.

Hayley sighed. Fine. Take it.

She pushed the pot toward them.

They dumped her leftover pasta into the casserole, mixed it with the gravy and scraps, and practically inhaled it.

Watching them eat like that, Hayley cracked open a soda and said dryly, You guys really that hungry?

Of course!Derek grinned, mouth full. We haven’t had a meal this good in weeks!

Aren’t you all from the military? Don’t they feed you decently there?

Ethan waved his hand. Not anymore! Our Eastern Division’s main base gets first priority for supplies. The rest of us barely get scraps, and the food only gets worse. When we left, our meals were down to veggie pasta with plain soup!

Are you talking about Base K1?Hayley asked calmly.

Yeah! You’ve heard of it?Gavin’s eyes lit up.

On the radio,Hayley said casually. No need to be honest. This lot probably had no idea how people spread information about their base anyway.

Our base is huge,Caleb said proudly. We’ve been rescuing people from Aecraton and Brookville. It’s the biggest relief hub in the East.

Logan, who rarely spoke, added quietly, It’s also one of the safest. Most of the Eastern Division’s troops are stationed there.
