Chapter 684
When Scott and Hayley came out of the bathroom, most people were already awake after Sawyer’s episode.
No one went back to sleep.
Outside, the zombies’ howls grew louder and louder, but they still hadn’t broken through the castle.
Everyone stayed on edge, waiting for the Zombie King to show up. Yet even as the sun began to rise, it never appeared.
That caught Hayley off guard.
Was it really going to be this smooth?
She held her post until the first light crept over the horizon. Outside, the zombies that had been snarling all night started to slow down.
At the eastern window, the zombie with its head jammed inside was still ramming forward, slamming its skull against the planks and the cabinet blocking the opening.
Its shriveled face was torn apart, its flesh mangled. The sharp edges of the metal bars scraped along its cheekbones every time it lunged, making the sound of metal grinding against bone cut through the air.
“Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
All around the castle, the zombies stood stiff and relentless, throwing themselves at the walls in a dull,
mechanical rhythm.
The night passed without anything breaking through.
After confirming that things below were still under control, Hayley gave the order to move out.
“How are you two feeling?” she asked Caleb and Gavin.
“We’re good now.”
After a night of rest, most of their injuries had healed.
“Good. Then we’re leaving.”
Hayley gathered everyone. They packed quickly and fell in behind her.
When they pushed the doors open, the traps they had set the day before were still there, untouched.
“What a waste,” Derek muttered.
Ethan knocked him on the head. “It’s not a waste. You wanted them breaking in?”
Better wasted than dead.
They headed for the staircase on the right pulling down the wise on the
