Chapter 685
Hayley stared at the spot where the level six zombie had wanted
The next second, a commation broke out behind them in the hallway
The same mental-variant zombie reappeared
Its twisted face locked onto the group. With its short legs pumping like it was running a sprint, it charged straight at Laurel and the others who had just dodged it
“Aaaah!”
“Aaahh!
Laurel and the rest panicked instantly, scrambling back like spooked animals. They rushed straight behind Hayley’s group.
At the same time, Hayley pushed her mental energy outward, stretching it to its limit. A powerful wave surged out and slammed back toward the zombie.
Scott, standing beside her, turned sharply. Her mental strength was insane!
Before the zombie could even reach them, it vanished again.
A split second later, a piercing scream echoed from the fifth floor below.
“Stay here. Don’t move,” Hayley said sharply. “Don’t take down the wire. It’s all an illusion. I’m going up to finish it.”
A level-six mental-variant zombie wasn’t something you could let go. If it slipped away, no one here would be able to deal with it later.
Hayley turned and ran up the stairs.
“I’m going, too.” Griffin didn’t hesitate, following right after her.
A few others looked like they wanted to go, but none of them had Griffin’s habit of ignoring orders.
“I’ll go as well.” Scott followed.
Once the two of them left, Winona suddenly broke free from the group and ran after them, too.
With several of the strongest people gone, Laurel’s group completely lost it.
“The strongest ones just left! What do we do now?”
“Should we go, too?”
“Stay put,” Thomas said coldly. “If our boss told you to wait, then you wait. She said it’s all an illusion.”
The moment he finished speaking, the hallway ahead suddenly filled with zombies.

“Raarh!”
“Raarh!”
They poured out of the dim corridor, faces twisted, bodies drenched in blood. Some had hollowed-out stomachs. Others were missing half their heads. Rot had shriveled them down to skin stretched tight over bone, their gray-white eyes the only thing still alive with hunger.
“Raarh! Raarh!”
One of them dropped to all fours and sprinted straight toward them.
Thomas and Leonard exchanged a glance.
Leonard lifted a hand, sending a stream of water slicing cleanly through the crowd. It passed straight through
It was an illusion.
As long as you didn’t panic, it couldn’t touch you.
Thomas’s group had fought their way through real zombie hordes for years. This wasn’t enough to shake
them.
One by one, they held their ground like statues, guarding each corner of the floor, letting the zombies rush at them without flinching.
On the other hand, Laurel’s group didn’t have that kind of nerve.
