Chapter 689

When Hayley heard that answer, she quickly asked, “Where’s your mom?”

“She’s dead,” Winona said.

“Where did she die? How?”

“I don’t remember.”

Winona had been too young back then. There was no way she could recall that much.

Hayley looked at the little girl, clearly still so young, and was about to ask more when a scream exploded from downstairs.

“Ahh!”

Hayley’s head snapped up. She glanced around at everything in front of her. “Gaffin, pack up everything here.”

“You got it!”

Griffin immediately started stuffing everything in the room into storage.

At that moment, on the fourth floor, fire, water, and metal abilities streaked through the air.

They slammed wildly into the flood of zombies surging in from all sides.

The wire nets strung across the hallway and stairwell were dotted with bright red drops of blood. Every trap Hayley had t earlier had been triggered, tangling up a large number of zombies.

But it still wasn’t enough to stop the endless tide pouring in.

As zombies rushed in from every direction, the space the group had to move shrank tighter and tighter.

One zombie was crouched over a person, tearing into them. Halfway through, it suddenly let go and lunged toward someter fresher nearby.

Its mouth hung open, red and wet, fresh blood still dripping down in thick, sticky strands.

It planted both hands on the ground and shot forward in a blur, moving so fast that it left an afterimage as it charged straight s Laurel, who was backed into a corner.

Laurel stared as the zombie ignored everyone else and came straight for her Her pupils blew wide with fear

She was sure she was dead.

Just as the zombie was about to reach her, it slammed into something unseen, as if it had bit an invisible wall, a

“Get down, all of you. I’ll hold them off” Hayley raised a barrier of air, sealing the group off from the zombies, then towed out rope.

It dropped from the fourth floor window all the way down.

The moment they saw it, relief flooded their faces.

With Hayley here, everything felt under control.

Derek went first, sliding down the rope.

Once he hit the ground, he quickly cleared out the few scattered zombies nearby and stayed at the base, helping the others down one by one.

Ethan, Caleb… Laurel, Felix.

As Laurel gripped the rope and started climbing down, she couldn’t stop thinking about what she had done yesterday

Even now, with no zombies below, it still felt terrifying. She couldn’t imagine how much worse it had been yesterday with zombies everywhere.

She couldn’t even bear the thought of it.

Her thoughts drifted to Hayley. She had set Hayley up, and all Hayley did was slap her a few times. If it had been her, she would’ve wanted to rip the other person apart.

Clutching the rope tightly, Laurel stumbled the rest of the way down with help from below.

Soon, everyone had made it out.

Hayley looked at the swarm of zombies still throwing themselves forward. After a moment’s thought, she decided they w worth dealing with..
