A level-six mental-variant erystal core.

Hayley slipped the crystal into her inventory, then turned straight for the table.

She picked up the empty vial and studied it closely.

Most of the label was filled with abbreviations and technical terms in a foreign language. The only word she could make out was “evolution.”

But the stamped date underneath it was clear.

August 9, 2031.

The day everything began.

She opened the lower compartment of the lockbox.

Inside were more vials, all empty.

Each one was labeled with a date. They were all from before August 9. The earliest went back a full

Hayley froze.

Her mind buzzed, something clicking into place.

She turned and walked over to the corpse on the floor. Up close, she noticed the clothes. It wasn’t a dress, but a lab coat

“No. 3. S-level Evolver.”

Then there had to be a No. 2 and a No. 1. Maybe even a No. o.

Where were they now?

Hayley felt like she had just stepped into something far bigger than she had expected.

“I’ve been here before.”

Winona’s voice broke through her thoughts.

Hayley looked up.

Winona walked over to one of the white cabinets and crouched down, reaching into the gap beneath it. She fumbled around for a second, then pulled a doll out.

“My mom gave this to me,” Winona said, holding it up.
