“Laurel… What you said just now, is it really true?” Miranda shot a cautious glance at the group gathered in the distance, then looked back at Laurel, eyes wide with hope.

A few other young men and women stood with her, listening closely.

“Of course, it’s true. When have I ever lied to you?” Laurel said.

“Things are back to normal out there, at least in the Eastern region. Aecraton is completely safe. Two massive steel walls keep the zombies out. There’s not a single one inside.

“Everyone living there has a place to stay and food to eat. And the people there are super nice. When you arrive, they walk you through everything and help you get settled. At the base I’m in, we’ve got two full grocery stores. Anything you need is there. Meat, eggs, fresh produce… More than we can even finish.”

“Damn, that sounds unreal.”

“That’s way better than the inner camp.”

“It sounds like paradise!”

The group buzzed with disbelief.

Only one woman curled her lip, unimpressed. “Yeah, right. You expect us to believe that? She’s just making stuff up, and you’re all eating it up.”

“Roxanne, I’m not lying,” Laurel said, trying to keep her voice steady.

“Oh, please.” Roxanne Greer crossed her arms and shoved her way forward, rolling her eyes. “You’ve always loved putting on a show and running your mouth. Aecraton’s restored? What, the government magically came back? Who else could take back that much land?”

“It’s the Haylight League. It has over 60 bases working together. They’re not weak at all.”

“Still talking nonsense!” Roxanne snapped. “Do you even hear yourself? Sixty bases? Who has that kind of power to unite that many bases? And now you’re saying grocery stores are stocked, meat and food everywhere, more than people can eat? Hello? This is the apocalypse! If anything like that existed, it would’ve been wiped out in a day. You don’t even try to make it believable. Give me a break.”

She kept going, one jab after another, until Laurel’s face flushed with anger and frustration.

How could someone be this stupid and this confident about it?

“I’m telling the truth!” Laurel turned urgently to Hayley. “She’s Hayley, the director of the base I joined. And she’s the commander of all 62 bases in the league!”

At that, Roxanne immediately looked over.

She had noticed Hayley earlier. Even in a world like this, the woman looked put together, almost untouched by hardship. It made something twist in her chest.

“You,” Roxanne said sharply, pointing. “Why are you still here? Get out!”

“Watch your tone when talking to our boss!” Felix said, frowning.

“Oh, you’re still keeping this act going?” Roxanne scoffed. “First a league, then bases, now your boss? All this talk about her being the director and commander. You really think we’re idiots? Even if your little league were real, places like that are run by men. Always have been. No way a woman’s in charge.”

She spoke with such certainty that the people around her started to waver.

They looked at Laurel and the others again, doubt creeping into their eyes.

Yeah… If a place like that really existed, some powerful guy would be running it. No way a woman could manage all that.

She must’ve made it all up!
