Chapter 703
The sharp crack of the slap made everyone freeze.
That one really landed.
And damn, it felt satisfying.
“Ms. Reid’s got a hell of a swing,” Felix muttered.
“As long as it’s not aimed at us,” Laurel added.
Behind them, Winona stared up at Hayley, eyes shining as if she had just seen something incredible.
Miranda and the others didn’t say anything, but the relief on their faces said enough.
If someone kept saying it takes two to start something, maybe they just needed a slap to prove otherwise.
Roxanne, who had been sobbing a second ago, suddenly stopped. She sniffled, staring at Hayley in a daze, as if she had forgotten how to cry.
The rest of the onlookers went quiet, too, caught off guard.
The older woman who got slapped came back to her senses and immediately started wailing. “This is ridiculous! Are you all just going to stand there and do nothing?”
“Enough.” Kieran cut her off, his face dark. “I said I’d handle this. Who’s in charge here, you or me?”
He glanced at Hayley, then raised his voice. “That’s it. Everyone, clear out. Inner camp selection’s tomorrow. Go get ready.”
With that, the crowd quickly dispersed.
The older woman, still fuming, leaned on Roxanne as they left, both of them clutching their swollen faces. Before turning away, she shot Hayley a vicious look.
Seeing she still needed a reminder, Hayley lifted her hand slightly.
The woman flinched and hurried off.
“That’s enough from you, too.”
Kieran’s voice came from behind her.
He stared at Hayley, his expression cold.

mercy.
Hayley met his gaze and gave a quiet scoff. “You’re not a bad guy. If you were, you wouldn’t have covered for us earlier when the inner camp people showed up.”
She meant the lie he had told, saying they were just new arrivals. It had kept trouble off them. She wasn’t
blind.
This guy was stubborn, rigid, and hard to reason with, but he wasn’t a bad man. That much was clear.
Kieran let out a sharp huff. His expression eased just a little, though his tone stayed rough. “I didn’t do it to protect you. Don’t get the wrong idea. Now take your people and leave. We don’t want you here.”
“Old man, you’re not the enemy. Neither am I.”
Hayley stepped closer.
“I’m trying to get you all out of here. We’ve already secured two cities outside. Aecraton and Brookville are ours now. There are no zombies, and production’s back up. The apocalypse is a war between them and us. You and I are on the same side. Join us.”
Her voice carried, steady and certain.
Kieran looked at her, something shifting in his eyes despite himself. He studied her from head to toe.
