Chapter 707

At his words, the crowd shifted aside, opening a path and revealing Hayley and the other two behind her.
The man in the white coat studied them closely. The longer he looked, the more interested he seemed. His gaze moved from Hayley to Winona, then to Griffin.
“You two. Come with me.”
He pointed at Hayley and Winona.
“What about me?” Griffin asked quickly.
The man glanced at him. “No.”
Griffin went still. “Why not?”
“You don’t qualify.”
Griffin stared at the man.
How the hell did he not qualify? He had the looks, the age, the build. Not to mention, his half-zombie condition. Anywhere else would’ve fought to take him.
And here, he didn’t make the cut?
Were these people blind?
Before he could say more, voices rose from the crowd.
“No! You can’t pick them!”
“Yeah! They’re not even from our camp! Pick us instead!”
People started protesting all at once.
There were only 50 spots. If those 2 took them, what about everyone else?
The inner camp only selected people twice a year. Who knew when the next chance would come? How
could they let outsiders take those spots?
“They showed up yesterday! They’re not one of us!”
Hearing that, the man in the white coat frowned, a sharp edge creeping into his expression.
“Outsiders?”
Right then, Kieran stepped forward.
“Sir, it’s a misunderstanding,” he said quickly, lowering his posture, all deference now. “They are from our camp. They just joined yesterday. We didn’t even have time to hold a proper welcome, so people don’t recognize them yet.”
is that so?”
“Yes, yes,” Kieran said, forcing a smile. “That’s on me. I didn’t inform everyone in time. They only just arrived yesterday. No one expected them to be selected so soon. That’s why people reacted like that
The man in the white coat studied him, then his expression eased.
“We have our own standards. If you weren’t chosen, you don’t qualify. There’s no explanation, and no matter what you say, you won’t be getting a spot.”
His gaze swept coldly over the crowd.
Then he picked a few more people, bringing the total to 50.
“Those selected, come with me. Each family will receive 500 pounds of food. That’s it for this round.”
As he finished, people behind him pushed forward carts loaded with supplies.
Someone sat at a table, recording names and family contacts for each selected person. Once registered, the supplies were given.
Those without family could list a friend. If they had no one at all, Kieran would collect the food on their behalf and hold onto it.
Word was, people chosen for the inner camp worked inside for five years before returning.
But the apocalypse had only lasted four so far. The first group hadn’t come back yet. No one knew what it was really like in there.
