Chapter 706
“Grandpal Eat!”
Kieran was turning over mud bricks when he heard his grandson’s voice. He looked up.
Hugo came running over, carrying a pot of stew.
Kieran’s brows pulled together. “Where’d you get that?”
The pretty lady gave it to me.”
That was all Kieran needed to hear. Of course, it was from Hayley. No one else here had food like that.
“Take it back
Hugo hugged the pot tight. “No!”
“Give it back. It’s not yours.”
“No!
Hugo dropped to the ground and threw a full tantrum while clutching the pot. Kieran tried pulling it away a few times, but Hugo wouldn’t let go.
“Do you even know what that is? You can’t just take other people’s things. How are you going to pay for
it?” Kieran asked.
Hugo just held on, mumbling, “G-Good food.”
Kieran let out a long sigh, the fight draining out of him. “Fine. Just eat it.”
He turned and went back to his work.
A moment later, a spoonful of stew was held out in front of him.
“Grandpa, eat.” Hugo grinned at him, simple and bright. “I-It’s good.”
Kieran’s eyes teared up a little. “Silly kid.”
That night, Hayley’s group lay out their sleeping bags and settled in.
The moon hung high overhead.
Footsteps approached. Someone was carrying a pot.
Hayley opened her eyes at the sound.
Kieran stood a few feet away. He set the now-clean pot down, then turned to leave,
Before he walked off, he said, “You people should leave soon. The inner camp… They’re not like us. If they find out you’re outsiders, they’ll kill you.”

Hayley blinked, watching his thin, hunched figure disappear into the dark.
By morning, the camp was already buzzing.
People from the outer camp had washed up the night before. Now, they wore the cleanest clothes they had, doing their best to look presentable.
They were waiting for the inner camp’s selection.
Hayley’s group had grown overnight. Everyone who had eaten with her had gathered on her side.
“Are you still planning to go through with the selection?” Hayley asked.
“What’s the point?” Miranda said. “We’re going with you.”
Hayley nodded. “Laurel, Felix. You two take them out later.”
There was no signal here, so no way to call for transport. However, the area outside had already been cleared. Walking out would be safe enough.
“Got it, Ms. Reid,” Laurel and Felix said.
Right then, the gates to the inner camp opened. A wave of people surged forward, rushing to get closer, trying to stand at the front.
Hayley spotted the same group from yesterday and walked over as well.
The people in white uniforms looked at the eager crowd in front of them, their expressions cold, almost
detached.
