The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 716

Chapter 716

The corridor was lined with observation rooms, almost like hospital wards.

Each one held a single person who had been strapped down. Their arms and legs bound to the bed, tubes running in and out of their bodies. Some pumped fluid in, while others drained it out. Every single one of them looked like they were barely holding on.

Right then, Hayley saw a familiar face.

Eric.

They had taken him earlier today. Now, he looked nothing like a zombie. His gray eyes were empty, fixed on nothing. His skin had gone pale, veins dark beneath it.

His body was hooked up to a machine that looked similar to a dialysis unit. Thick black liquid was being pulled out of him, filtered, then sent back in as a pale, almost white fluid.

He didn’t look like a zombie anymore, more like a corpse.

Voices drifted down the hall.

“Did all of yesterday’s tests fail?”

“Yeah. All ten subjects failed.”

“Finding a compatible host is harder than we thought. We’ve already reduced the toxicity as much as we can, and none of them can handle it.”

“Tell me about it. They’re screening for stronger candidates outside right now. We need to lower it even more. S-level gave strict orders. We need someone who can survive the original virus and develop

antibodies.”

The voices were getting closer. Someone was about to step out from one of the rooms ahead.

Hayley scanned the area quickly, then moved. She pressed the card she had taken against Eric’s door.

An alarm blared instantly. Red lights flashed overhead.

Before she could react, thin beams of red light locked onto her position, and two people in white coats

who had been talking earlier rushed out.

“Who are you?”

More people poured into the hallway.

“I don’t know where this is,” Hayley said, holding up the ID badge. I’m looking for help.”

One of them stepped forward, eyes cold. “Where did you come from?”

“Someone brought me to the restroom,” she said, voice steady. “The water tank broke, and there was a

leak. He got shocked and passed out. I came out to find help. I didn’t know where I was going

She didn’t break eye contact.

The lead man studied her for a second, then turned. “Check it. Bring her.”

They moved as a group, heading back the way she came.

Hayley didn’t resist. She followed calmly, not even needing to be forced.

Back at the restroom, they found the man still lying in the water.

The leader immediately called the control room over his earpiece, pulling up the surveillance. Half a minute later, he looked back at Hayley, suspicion still in his eyes. Then he spoke into the mic again.

“B179. Get over here,”

The other door opened. The man who had escorted Hayley earlier stepped in.
